Lang geleden dat ik nog zo’n AI-prultekst heb gelezen. Niet tot het einde geraakt.
They met at 12 and 13. A year later, his mother died — and she became his anchor. He became one of the biggest rock stars in the world. She stayed in Dublin, raised their children, and built her own life in the shadow of overwhelming fame. They've been together 50 years. But don't mistake longevity for easy
Alison Stewart met Paul Hewson at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. He was skinny, intense, full of big ideas. She was grounded and unimpressed by his bravado.
Then his mother died. Iris Hewson collapsed at her own father's funeral and died four days later. Paul was fourteen. His father shut down emotionally. The house went silent.
Paul became angry, rebellious, lost.
Ali was there. She didn't try to fix him. She walked with him to school. Made sure he ate. Listened when he needed to talk and stayed quiet when he didn't
She became his anchor before either of them understood what that meant.
In 1976, Paul and his friends formed a band that would eventually become U2. He took the stage name Bono. Ali and Bono started dating that same year.
While he rehearsed in garages and dreamed of stadiums, she focused on school. She was ambitious in her own right. She was not going to be just "the girlfriend of the guy in the band."
They married in August 1982. He was 22. She was 21.
Then U2 didn't just become famous. They became one of the biggest bands in the world. By the mid-1980s, Bono was touring 250 to 300 days a year. Stadiums. Sold-out arenas. Fame on a scale most people can't imagine.
Ali stayed in Dublin
In 1989, she gave birth to their first child while finishing her university degree in Social Science and Sociology. Bono was performing for 80,000 people in stadiums around the world. She was alone in Dublin, raising a newborn and completing her education.
She could have resented him. Many people in her position would have.
Instead, she made a decision: she would not be defined by his fame. She would build her own life.
So she did.
She became an activist, protesting nuclear pollution and traveling to Chernobyl to work with charities helping affected children. In 2005, she co-founded Edun, a fashion brand built around ethical manufacturing and fair trade with African countries.
Meanwhile, Bono was meeting presidents and popes, campaigning for African debt relief, being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. His ego grew. Fame does that.
And Ali had to live with it.
Bono has said in interviews that she is "the smartest person I know" and "the person who keeps me grounded." What that actually means is that she was the one who told him when he was full of himself. The one who raised their four children while he was touring. The one who reminded him that Dublin didn't care about his fame.
In a rare interview, she said: *"There were times I had to be both mother and father. Times I resented it. But we made a commitment."*
That's the truth most celebrity love stories skip over.
Bono has written songs about her. *Sweetest Thing* was an apology for missing her birthday because he was in the studio. *All I Want Is You* is about her.
But a song isn't the same as showing up
A song doesn't raise the children. A song doesn't sit alone at Christmas while he's on tour. A song doesn't endure the loneliness of being married to someone the whole world wants a piece of.
They met at 12 and 13. His mother died. She became his anchor. He became a global icon. She stayed in Dublin, built her own career, raised their family, and kept their children out of the tabloids.
They've been together fifty years.
But longevity isn't the same as easy.
She stayed.
And staying cost her.
Gelezen. Dank voor de tip.

Hartelijk dank Hava Temicheva in #destandaard vandaag. U eert journalistieke moed. U moedigt me aan. En hopelijk veel collegae.
One of my questions for Messi would be: what is the best tip you’ve ever received from a coach? And from whom?

🙄 Ik kan dit niet meer serieus nemen. Begin terug van voor af aan, met een geïntegreerd plan voor kerntaken overheid en alle focus op economische groei. Fire up all engines.
We gaan er hard voor knokken. Want het gaat over iedereen.
Replying to @PVanGompel

Waarom? Waarom?
