In 2013, Queen guitarist Brian May began turning 157 acres of former farmland in Dorset, England, into a wildlife haven now known as May’s Wood, a project that has grown into a rewilding effort with more than 100,000 trees and shrubs planted across the land. As the woodland matured, insects, birds, and small mammals began returning, restoring biodiversity to ground that had been dominated by intensive agriculture, so that what had been open farmland became a growing ecosystem meant to give wildlife more space. The same musician known to millions as Queen’s guitarist has spent years on that return of the land to forest and to the animals using it.
