The Marlins are running one of the most interesting side quests in baseball right now
Their best starters are also their highest-leverage relievers?
Let's talk about it 🧵

Gone are the days of "getting a MoCap" and being ahead of the curve
Whether its through a facility in a bullpen or using in-game data, the edge is no longer having Motion Capture data - its how you use it

Former Dodgers prospect Gabe Emmett has gained almost 7 mph in 3 months.
How did he go from 88 to 94.9 in such a small window?🧐

More here on some of the work Janson put in to get here, with some quotes from the man himself, in this cool piece by @Travis_Sawchik:

Before this season, Janson Junk had thrown 947 fourseam fastballs in his big league career.
13 of them were 96.0+
0 of them were 97.0+
Last night he threw 31 FF.
12 were 96+
3 were 97 🔥

Understanding why certain pitches move the way they do is the first step towards efficient pitch design
Pitch movement is derived from both Magnus (Spin-Based) and Non-Magnus movement ⚖️
What’s the difference? How do they work?

Sunday Side Sessions: Starter v. Reliever Workload
By better understanding the demands of the season, we can better prepare pitchers in the offseason

Then we filled the gaps.
Added a sinker that's shown -20+ inches of run and a cutter that rides up to 13+ IVB while living within 2 inches of the y-axis.
Now he has something to run at both sides of the plate and can sequence righties and lefties without repeating a look.

There are few jobs that allow you to turn any idea into reality. Driveline will always be the land for new ideas
Latest idea - CV Ball Tracking to measure command, not only in bullpens but on every throw. #bigstrikes #noballs

Replying to @ShaneJohnson_1
@ShaneJohnson_1 LHP, sophomore at Oregon, walked into Driveline in June throwing from two arm slots.
He's leaving with one release, a 7-pitch mix, and a fastball that already grades MLB average at 89-92 because of where it comes from. Here's the summer.

Fall ball is where arms get cooked.
Classes, weights, bullpens, catch play, live ABs, all stacked with no plan, no tracking. By mid-October everyone's got dead arm, and nobody saw the spike coming.
PULSE sees it. Worn below the elbow, it turns every throw into a workload number, so the spike shows up on a screen while there's still time to fix it.

The game keeps evolving. Another good example on why rule changes need to be conservative - hitters are getting a lot better and adapting to pitching.

Ripping a ton of differential donor sport work for the first part of my on-ramp.
I haven’t thrown in about a year. It would be a terrible idea for me to go straight into throwing a baseball because
1) My elbow would explode
2) The attractor states I funnel into are disadvantageous to throwing hard and accurate.
These have similar enough attractor states to throwing a baseball to improve tissue capacity in the shoulder and elbow complex.
They are also increasing my attunement to the affordance landscape, giving me more potential solutions to work with when I get back to throwing the baseball.

Now that college football is back, we have officially entered "QB's throwing pre-game plyos off a wall or goal post" video season
How can we apply what we have learned from pitchers to quarterbacks?
