UPDATE: The Met Police said 890 arrests were made. 857 arrests were for showing support for Palestine Action, while 33 were arrested for other offences, including 17 for assaults on police officers.
Amnesty International deployed observers to the protest, and police claims that the protest turned violent are a misrepresentation. Our observers witnessed the Defend Our Juries protest being entirely peaceful.
Some supporters of the protest shouted insults at the police and a small number of them attempted to prevent the police from carrying arrestees away. This did not appear to be a coordinated effort.
Police officers, on a number of occasions, were aggressive towards supporters of the protest. This included violently shoving people away and pulling out batons to make space whilst protesters were arrested and hauled into police vans.
The scenes yesterday were a shocking demonstration of how the UK's overly broad terrorism laws are being used to suppress free speech.
🚨BREAKING: Hundreds arrested in Parliament Square for peaceful protest against ban of Palestine Action
When the Government is arresting people under terrorism laws for sitting peacefully in protest, something is going very wrong here in the UK.
Peaceful protest is a fundamental right. People are understandably outraged by the ongoing genocide being committed in Gaza and are entitled under international human rights law to express their horror.
Amnesty has long criticised UK terrorism law for being excessively broad, vaguely worded and a threat to freedom of expression. Today's response only further demonstrates that our concerns were justified.
Any restriction on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly must be lawful, necessary and proportionate to achieving a legitimate aim. Criminalising speech in this context is only permitted when it incites violence or advocates hatred. Expressing support for Palestine Action does not, in itself, meet this threshold.

Apoyo a Palestine Action".

I think we managed to give her the send off she deserved.
She was a very special little girl 💜 (1/8) 🧵

I first met little Tommy about 10 months ago…
🌴 He was about 2 months old in the jungle with no mum or siblings
🦠 He disappeared for 3 days with parvo and we thought he’d died.
🦴 He then had his leg / hip broken and hid himself away. Only a local lady was able to show me where he’d hidden
👩⚕️ We got his operation and rehabbed him for 6 months
🏡 Decided he couldn’t go back on the streets as he would die
✈️ Last week he flew to his forever him in England. He took it all in his stride. Travel, weather, new family. No problem for Tommy.
Rehoming a few street dogs won’t solve the overall problem like I hope to do. But people always ask me how I get over all the hard losses etc. The answer is seeing the photos and videos of dogs like Tommy in the last 30 seconds of this video and the looks on his new mums face. Absolutely priceless. 🥰🙏
Well done Tommy you did it

Jumbo passed away peacefully at 1pm yesterday. As always it was a sad moment but I got 22 months with the big guy after I took him in from the streets. I always think the amount of nicknames you have for a dog shows how much you love them. Jumbo, Big Fella, Jumbotron, Jumbalicious, Super Jumbo will be very missed.
He had a family but they left him behind during the pandemic. He then ended up on the streets living under a street food stall. His health battles were always ongoing but he was just about the happiest dog I’ve ever come across. He had a bigger social circle than me and used to visit the local restaurants, bars and his beloved 7-11 where he’d pretend he was starving and have people buying him sausages. The staff loved him so much he even patrolled the aisles and hung around the sausage area waiting for tourists.
I’ve 1000 memories in my head of the time we spent together. All good ones. Those will never leave me. What I loved about Jumbo is he welcomed Tina and Derek in for their end of life care and helped snoop when he was passing too. All since August. His end came quite quickly and it was his old street life catching up on his kidneys as they failed.
I’ve looked over to his spot on the couch for the last 24 hours or waited to hear his little steps coming but they don’t. I’ll miss him very badly and the toll lately has been hard to take but to be honest Jumbo is just one of those dogs that I was lucky enough to meet. Meeting him was one of the highlights of my life 🥰🙏
