Scarce electricity and power bottlenecks make Bitcoin’s hashrate loss a durable secular trend. BTC has lost its monopoly on the marginal megawatt, which now goes to inference (and Pearl)
Great chart from @hashrateindex comparing revenue per MWh across ZEC and BTC mining and AI compute. Curious what H100 numbers would look like with additional revenue from PRL.

Most interesting Pearl chart I've seen. Wallets that mined $PRL in launch week still hold 124M coins. That's 96% of everything they mined and roughly a third of circulating supply. The three biggest (3.86M, 3.31M, 2.75M) haven't moved a single coin since May.

Wrote about how, as ZEC is a response to BTC's institutional capture and quantum threat, PRL is a response to its buckling security budget. I'm long, a bit.

Should money be backed by AI capex (Pearl) or ASIC capex (Bitcoin)? Pearl is AI money backed by the most amount of capex spend in human history.
Fun fact of the day: Bitcoin mining cost is split about 50/50 between compute capex and electricity. Meanwhile, AI inference is almost completely dominated by compute capex.

The Pearl trade is strikingly similar to HYPE: - Fair launch - Nearly impossible for large funds (esp. US based) to buy: lack of qualified custodians, can't buy from non-kyc miners, no listings - Gives retail and CT an opportunity to get in first - Elite team executing Bullish

Today is probably a good time to check in on things with @privy_io, which became part of @stripe just over a year ago. Our acquisition was predicated on three factors: stablecoin growth, self-custody as a key enabler of broader global coverage, and rapidly increasing demand for programmable financial infrastructure. As we said at the time, "money has to reside somewhere, and Privy builds the world's best programmable vaults." Since then, the Privy team has executed exceptionally well: assets in Privy wallets have grown ~25x, monthly active developers are up ~3x, revenue is up ~9x, and Privy now facilitates nearly $25B of monthly transaction volume. @tryramp, @Deel, @Klarna, @felixpago, @HyperliquidX, and thousands of other businesses are building embedded banking functionality on Privy. At Stripe, we're deeply integrating Privy into Treasury, @Link, and Connect. In each case, it's accelerating our global expansion, and enabling us to build better functionality faster. (Coming soon: @Link balances.) We're also seeing that Privy's wallet infrastructure is the ideal substrate for agents to transact and earn -- live today with @merit_systems, @orthogonal_sh, @Nevermined_ai, @prlnet, and more. Developers prefer programmable financial infrastructure, but agents need it. We expect that the agentic economy will continue to grow extremely quickly. The Privy team has maintained remarkable product velocity, with major launches this year including deposit addresses, earning on Privy balances, digital asset accounts, custodial wallets, and Stripe's own stablecoin cards. It's also been neat to see how Privy has been accelerated by Stripe, with better onramps, @stablecoin payment rails and licenses, Stripe's fiat capabilities and issuing stack, and integration with @Tempo. Together, we're building one API for holding stablecoin balances and earning yield, moving money in and out of fiat, and orchestrating spend with cards. We still have a lot of work to do, not least in integrating everything across Privy, Bridge, and the rest of Stripe -- there's been so much feature and functionality expansion that we haven't yet had much time to reconcile everything. Overall, though, I'm very happy with how things are going, and excited by where these capabilities are headed. If you're interested in working on the future of stablecoins, agentic payments, and crypto's deployment in the real world, you should get in touch with @sternhenri (now leading all of @StripeCrypto) or others on the team.

Tom Schmidt says Arthur Hayes' FLOP is a copycat of Pearl and Arthur is just "a very good promoter" Robbie: "Have you seen this Arthur Hayes FLOP thing? 'Cause it sounds a lot like that" Tom: "No disrespect to Arthur. I think FLOP is kind of a fork copycat of Pearl" Tom: "He has this whole payment thing, which I don't really think is like... also no disrespect" Tom: "I look at the Pearl team and I look at whoever's running FLOP... one is really world-class researchers, there's some really novel ideas" Tom: "I love Arthur, and I think he's a very good promoter"

$PRL up 301% in September The pure play for crypto x AI
September belonged to crypto x artificial intelligence (AI): $NEAR up 183% $VVV up 70% $WLD up 47% $TAO up 37% Grayscale's Artificial Intelligence Crypto Sector returned 54% for the month, versus 24% for the broader crypto market. The move may reflect growing interest in blockchain as potential infrastructure for AI. Crypto burns energy. AI needs energy. @prlnet solved 2 for 1 with no tradeoffs: A highly efficient AI inference while mining. You do not need to believe in crypto to get a radically new cost/performance curve. If you’re using open models at scale - test and see for yourself!

On Pearl Having been back in NYC the last week, a lot of GPs at various funds have been asking me about my view on Pearl. I'm not spending time on crypto at all, but wanted to share my take. This is not a shill (PoW is insanely fickle) and NFA but wanted to share my take nontheless. For my overarching views on PoW, folks can see here(cyber.fund/content/the-spect…), here (bitcoinmagazine.com/bigread/…), and here (forum.celestia.org/t/assessi…). While I’m not really into crypto these days, I am a big fan of what the Pearl team is doing. Full disclosure: I am an investor and holder of Pearl in a multitude of ways and have known the founding team for years, having co-invested with one of their founders several times, and met @weinsteinomri in the process of them building out the initial idea. Backdrop My sense for quite a while is most investors don’t get proof of work and hence they don’t get Pearl. They make comparisons to proof of stake chains, which are categorically different: proof of stake is easier to launch, easier to maintain, easier to design a marketplace for (e.g., priority cancels, etc), and yes, easier to capture (source: Richard Cantillon). In a phrase, PoS is much closer to a shared financial ledger than to a real cryptocurrency. Yes, PoS networks have a type of currency, but not a very good one. If you know anything about me, though, you know I’m not like most investors – I love proof of work (see: my exchange with @hasufl here: x.com/waltjsmith/status/2089…)! That is not me bragging: I only love it and sort of get it because my brother runs a media company (@Blockspace, which also runs OPNEXT, a Bitcoin tech conference) — he’s mocked me and every VC he’s met for years for comparing PoS to PoW. More importantly, through him and through his media company, I’ve heard and read Miners transition to AI compute (e.g., HPC) for years. More on that later. Given Trump 2.0’s (will be generous here) willingness to ‘embrace’ crypto, we’ve seen a lot of proof of stake chains becoming increasingly (less generous here) entrenched with the federal government. Don’t agree with me? You don’t see the ‘Bitcoin Foundation’ forming a lobby group to fly to DC to make sure their casino stays online and gets preferential market structure in the Clarity Act, do you? Albeit it’s not perfect, proof of work incentives geographic decentralization and overall is a lot more resistant to capture and hence, credibly neutral. The upshot of that and of Trump embracing and/or capturing PoS networks is that any real attempt at proof of work is pretty interesting. That includes ZCash, which has a storied history as a more cypherpunk Bitcoin and now that includes Pearl. Pearl Proof of work is insanely hard to get right and also to maintain (see: all the PoW networks that launched but never got a critical mass of hashrate online). One thing that is clear to me is the deceleration in the growth of Bitcoin’s hashrate is in part driven by price but also by AI. Why is this happening? Because GPUs make more money than ASICs (Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustments squeezes margins and folks love dancing cat videos a lot). Don’t believe me? You should believe the Bitcoin miners – one of the big ones told my brother (told you we’d get back to this) in 2023 at a miner meetup in Jackson Hole that 1. they would be worried about Bitcoin’s security budget within a few halvings and 2. they wanted to pivot entirely to HPC. Into this vacuum, the Pearl team launched and are iterating on their network. I don’t totally get the math (90% chance anyone who says they do is lying IMO) but essentially they take proof of AI inference, grind it, and create a proof of work hash out of it! And va la – you have a new proof of work network which promises to amortize costly LLM inference (with seemingly zero overhead: x.com/WeinsteinOmri/status/2…) and secure a new PoW chain all at once. Pretty cool right? While it’s not perfect yet (proof of work is hard, remember), I invested in Pearl and remain excited about it because of: 1. the erosion of crypto’s principles in Trump 2.0 and within the context of PoS in general. 2. the slow burn on Bitcoin’s security budget 3. the proliferation of AI. This sort of makes Pearl the culmination of Ribbit’s token letter (docsend.com/view/hcv2rx2cq7h…) or even Black Rock’s thesis on AI and digital assets (docsend.com/view/hcv2rx2cq7h…). In another person’s words turning intelligence (x.com/prlnet/status/20531808…) into a new type of currency is “the unholy marriage of crypto and AI.” While the network needs to grow and ensure its PoW ecosystem maintains stability above all else, the team, early work with other AI players (e.g., Together AI: x.com/waltjsmith/status/2055…), etc make me incredibly excited about it. Much like @zooko's Zcash, it's a real shot on goal to do something amazing in an industry whose innovative days are mostly behind it.
