Turns out the OSF being down the last while was due to "automated bot traffic and crawlers"! I feel like AI companies are going to try sell our own work back to us in the near future...

This just reminds me of how dynastic the world of academia is. It’s like some kind of caste-light system.
In 1875, Arthur Schuster set sail for Siam to document a solar eclipse. Now, 150 years later, his great-great-granddaughter, Caltech Professor Dehn Gilmore, follows in his footsteps to explore Southeast Asia’s rich history and cultures. Join the journey: alumni.caltech.edu/event/bal…

My new blog post contains all of the material for the class on the History of Higher Education in the US that I taught for at the Stanford Graduate School of Education for the last 15 years.  In retirement I wanted to make the course available on the internet to anyone who is interested.  If you are a college teacher, feel free to use any of it in whole or part.  If you are a student or a group of students, you can work your way through the class on your own at your own pace.  Any benefits that accrue are purely intrinsic, since no one will get college credits.  But that also means you’re free to pursue the parts of the class that you want and you don’t have any requirements or papers.  How great is that. I’m posting the full syllabus below.  But it would be more useful to get it as a Word document through this link.  Feel free to share it with anyone you like. All of the course materials except three required books are embedded in the syllabus through hyperlinks to a Google drive.  For each week, the syllabus includes a link to tips for approaching the readings, links to the PDFs of the readings, and a link to the slides for that week’s class.  Slides also include links to additional sources.  So the syllabus is all that is needed to gain access to the full class. davidlabaree.com

What if learning AI became as normal as learning Maths or Science? Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce Artificial Intelligence as a mainstream school subject, setting the stage for a future where children don't just use AI but understand how to build, question and use it responsibly. The rollout will begin with Classes VIII to XII under the Sarbat.AI project across government and affiliated private schools, before expanding to younger students. The curriculum, aligned with UNESCO's Ethical AI Framework, draws from global best practices and focuses not just on technology, but also on ethics, innovation and responsible digital citizenship. The goal is to ensure every child, whether from a city or a village, is prepared for an AI-driven future. As AI reshapes classrooms, careers and everyday life, teaching it early could help bridge the digital divide and prepare students for jobs that don't even exist yet. Should AI become a core subject in every state board across India? Tell us what you think in the comments. #Punjab #AI #EducationIndia [Punjab, AI, Education India, Sarbat.AI]

Everyone who has tried to get a grant or publish a paper in a top journal knows peer review is a deeply flawed system. At minimum, it is only as good as the quality of the reviewers, and reviewer selection has drifted far from merit, especially at the NIH. Given the technology available in 2026, there is no reason to preserve a system that operates as though we are still in the Middle Ages. Yet scientific societies are now engaged in a full-scale effort to resist any serious attempt to change the old system.
Nobel laureate John Mather is one of thousands opposing a proposed federal rule that could affect science grant funding. "Peer review protects the public from attempts to corrupt," he writes. Read more public comments in #APSNews, then submit your own comment by July 13: go.aps.org/3RtXoy8

Unsurprising that Simon Schama, an apologist for Israel’s genocidal destruction of Gaza, is chosen by a liberal paper, the FT, to reflect on the Declaration of Independence and its ideals. Schama embodies the now naked bigotry of Western liberals. ft.com/content/34eb59fa-fc22…
