Teresita Vistro, PNFSP Executive Director.

The fight for seed sovereignty is also a fight for food security because when farmers have control over a variety of seeds, it ensures that the food produced is culturally appropriate and sufficient to feed the community and the nation.
1
Moreover, it imposes heavy penalties on those who infringe the agreement. Farmers are then left behind because this agreement restricts their rights to access and breed their own indigenous seeds.
2
Under UPOV, seeds will be patented, thereby prohibiting farmers from saving, exchanging, and propagating seeds without the consent of plant breeders with intellectual property rights, who are usually big corporations.

Mr. Eliseo Ruzol Jr.—the resource person from MASIPAG— discussed the danger of the Philippines joining the International Union for the Protection of Varieties of Plants (UPOV), which violates farmers’ right to seed.
5
“Ang binhi po ay buhay.” One of the MASIPAG farmers emphasized in the forum as they opposed the plan of the Philippine government to join UPOV.
9
The forum organized by CHR titled “Balancing the Plate: Trade, Food Security and Human Rights” spoke about the plight of Filipino farmers and food advocates for seed sovereignty and food security.
