So... July 22nd 8 am ET we got ourselves a major event with a 3GW #DataCenter going off-grid in @pjminterconnect! I dive into it w/ data from FNET/GridEye set up by @UTKnoxville & @ORNL (more info: fnetpublic.utk.edu/). But first the news report: reuters.com/business/energy/… -1/12

Why is the Data Center build-out the reason why BAAJA will NOT pass? A rant. The obvious: I'm in favor of any law making grid & generation fleet expansions easier. However, the reality is that the market forces that could get BAAJA past the line are fine w/o it, too. -1/n

Last, but not least, the Biden's IRA has been largely frozen. W/ the midterms triggering changes in the Chambers we might see moneys being rerouted to the energy sector in more than one ways, bypassing permitting obstacles that require the BAAJA reforms. -11/n

So, yeah, data center buildouts, the gas industry growing well w/o grid expansions, energy effects to consumer sentiment subdued & the midterms expected to change the dynamics on the Hill, make me very sceptical about the BAAJA passing. -12/n

In @TheBrattleGroup's report on "Timely Interconnection of Data Centers (DCs)": UNLESS "Remedial Action Schemes" (RAS) can shed/shift large DC load in milliseconds, THEN they'll cause brown/black-outs due to voltage collapse (VC). Left: RAS, Right: slide from teaching VC.
Today, @Google @NVIDIA @EmeraldAI_ are launching the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), joined by @AnthropicAI, @TheAESCorp, @ConstellationEG, @GenerateCapital, @NationalGrid, @NRGenergy, and a dozen other industry partners. Our shared mission: modernize power system planning and operations for the 21st century to unlock the full potential of flexible data centers, enabling digital infrastructure to actively enhance system utilization, affordability, and reliability. Instead of waiting 5-7+ years for traditional system upgrades, multiple studies have found that reducing net grid withdrawal for less than 100 hours per year can unlock dozens of gigawatts of capacity, via compute flexibility, storage, or generation. At Google, we’ve proven this model by integrating 1 gigawatt of demand response capacity nationwide. To advance this mission, two new Google-commissioned reports are being released today that map actionable pathways forward: 1) @TheBrattleGroup: "Solutions for Timely Interconnection of Large Loads: Enabling Non-Firm Transmission Service," providing a technical blueprint to turn recent bipartisan direction from @FERC into operational reality. 2) @AuroraER_Oxford: "Curtailment Mitigation for Provisional Controllable Load Resources: Modeling the Effects of Front-of-Meter Netting," modeling flexible data centers in @ERCOT_ISO paired with front-of-meter resources. With thanks to AEMA's additional launch partners, @ADI_News, @CalibrantEnergy, @CamusEnergy, @ClearPathFound, @fluenceenergy, @GridUnity, PassKey, RWE, Splight, @verrusdata, and @voltusinc.

I hope everyone understands that this actually means that we CANNOT optimize the grid we've already paid for... (both meme-wise and reality-wise)

Why not 50 PW?!?! Why let engineering get in your way??? Hand-waving is free, anyway... xitter.cf/PMoutis/status/2080673…

Some thoughts... This was a TRULY IMMENSE GRID event involving data centers! The FNET/GridEye has been recording frequency for years. In most cases we see 10-30 mHz swings. July 22nd 8am ET (V1) was an almost 90 mHz event, i.e. 3x what @pjminterconnect typically sees. -10/12

At the 2026 @ieee_pes General Meeting @ieeepesgm (just returned from it), the focus was deep & hard on data centers. They can cause torsional effects to generator shafts, disrupt energy flows & affect power quality of nearby customers. -11/12

I have avoided the online discourse, because I'm tired of superficial ideas & what some claim they "can" (present tense!) do w/ their data centers (batteries, BTM gas, demand response, etc.) The nuance of power system engineering seems lost in the "hyperscale" chaos. -12/12

V2 starts when V1 ends. Albeit unsure, I think the data center was again involved since VA changes color first & there shouldn't be any generation left for frequency recovery. Probably, the data center was slowly picking up load & went off-grid. V2: youtube.com/watch?v=FtDwXxUj… 8/12

A few millisec's later in V1, (4) happens; the data centers tries to go back on-grid (frequency drops a bit), but the voltage must have still been low and disconnects again, causing another small frequency increase (VA changes color first) almost at the same number of Hz. -7/12
