He made the baritone iconic, the pause dramatic, and the raised eyebrow a plot twist. Amit Ji can make even a simple “Deviyon aur Sajjano” sound like a blockbuster opening. The man has always been in a league of his own. Happy Birthday, Angry Young Man! @SrBachchan

Some lives leave you deeply moved. Navi Pillay’s is one such life. From a family whose roots in South Africa began with her grandparents’ indentured labour, she rose to become a pioneering jurist who stood against apartheid and helped establish rape and systemic sexual violence as acts of genocide under international law. What an extraordinary journey. The Nobel Peace Prize recognises the remarkable contribution of this South African jurist of Tamil origin to human rights and justice. A moment of immense pride for Tamils everywhere.

The patronising tone of this article by @TheEconomist is striking, and its colonial lens is hard to ignore. It is deeply offensive that a British publication should lecture India on conservation when British colonial rule saw our lions and tigers hunted to the brink of extinction. Today, India is bringing them back. Since ancient times Indians have understood that humans and animals can share a landscape. Tamil Nadu’s Jallikattu is one living expression of that ancient harmony. These achievements deserve to be celebrated and championed, not viewed through a patronising colonial lens. India’s Project Cheetah has gone from an audacious idea to 60 cheetahs, 41 born in India. There were initial setbacks, including adult deaths and cub mortality, but the Indian Government persevered, learnt and adapted. It is an extraordinary moment of genuine national pride: India has achieved the world’s first intercontinental translocation of a large carnivore. India has also created the International Big Cat Alliance to take this conservation experience to the world. Across India, tigers and Asiatic lions are recovering; the Great Indian Bustard in Rajasthan is being returned to the wild; snow leopards in Himachal Pradesh, Nilgiri Tahr and dugongs in Tamil Nadu, and rhinos and red pandas in the North east are being protected and their populations restored. India’s conservation story deserves to be celebrated, studied and taught around the world, not viewed through a colonial hangover that smacks of racism.

Dying young need not be a tragedy. It can be glorious. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao is a great example. I have admired him since I knew him. Now I aspire to live like he did. - Kamal Haasan

Heartbreaking news of Nana Patekar Ji’s passing. An extraordinary artist and an even greater human being. The man was a force of nature, and he uplifted the lives of those around him. Beyond the screen, his work helping farmers in Maharashtra and his volunteer service during the Kargil War spoke volumes about his deep sense of duty. My deepest condolences to his family and his legions of fans.
