Thanks for having me @willripleyCNN, glad we could discuss our observations of HK42!
For the first time ever, Taiwan deliberately slowed its mobile internet speed across central and northern Taiwan, as the island democracy holds its largest annual war games to practice fending off a potential Chinese attack.

For nearly two weeks, Chinese fighter jets stopped buzzing Taiwan. It’s the longest lull since Taipei began releasing daily military data.
Today, five planes appeared. The pause baffled observers. So why did it happen? And is it over?

Tight piece by @joyuwang @WSJ on recent shifts in China's military operations around Taiwan.
Some nuggets:
“A period of this length with little or no air activity, while maritime activity remains consistent, is highly unusual,” said @OfficialBen_L, whose research organization, @PLATracker, documents Chinese military activity.
“Everybody has a theory, but nobody has an answer,” said Drew Thompson, a former Pentagon official responsible for China and Taiwan and now a senior fellow at Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies @RSIS_NTU. “The weapon is uncertainty.”
“What concerns me is we don’t know what it means,” he said. “It’s perpetual threats without communication, without dialogue, without thresholds.”
@MoNDefense Taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo said Tuesday that the Taiwanese military remains vigilant because “Beijing’s intent to annex us remains.”
“We cannot rely on a single indicator like the absence of aircraft. Chinese naval vessels still surround us daily,” Koo said.
“Everybody has a theory, but nobody has an answer.” China has routinely sent warplanes near Taiwan, but an unusual lull has stoked uncertainty about what Beijing is doing. wsj.com/world/china/mysterio… With quotes from @TangAnZhu @OfficialBen_L @KTristanTang

Glad to share some thoughts with @GregTorode on a development that is as bizarre as it is problematic.
A large Chinese military drone has conducted regular flights over the South China Sea in recent months while transmitting false transponder signals that made it appear to be other aircraft, including a sanctioned Belarusian cargo plane and a British Typhoon fighter jet.
Military attaches and security analysts scrutinizing the operations say the flights represent a step-change in China's gray-zone tactics in the contested South China Sea and appear to be testing possible decoy capabilities in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan reut.rs/3ZXVlTF

Taiwan MND reports that a PLA reconnaissance UAV was detected in the airspace surrounding Dongsha (Pratas), but departed following radio warnings.
In recent months, Dongsha has been the target of increased pressure from the PRC, specifically through the presence of the China Coast Guard, but this represents a significant escalation in coercion by Beijing.
At 0541hrs (UTC+8), a PLA reconnaissance UAV was detected entering Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ and entering airspace near Dongsha (the Pratas Islands). After radio warnings, the UAV departed the area. The #ROCArmedForces are monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.

Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command Conducts “Justice Mission 2025” Drills
东部战区开展“正义使命-2025”演习
Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson of the Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command: Starting from December 29, the PLA Eastern Theater Command is dispatching its Army, Navy, Air Force and Rocket Force troops to conduct joint military drills code-named “Justice Mission 2025” in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, southwest, southeast and east of the Taiwan Island, focusing on subjects of sea-air combat readiness patrol, joint seizure of comprehensive superiority, blockade on key ports and areas, as well as all-dimensional deterrence outside the island chain.
With vessels and aircraft approaching the Taiwan Island in close proximity from different directions, troops of multiple services engage in joint assaults so as to test their joint operations capabilities.
It is a stern warning against “Taiwan Independence” separatist forces, and it is a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard China’s sovereignty and national unity.
