October 17, 1990: During Game 2 of the 1990 World Series on October 17, 1990, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Tom Browning went missing from the dugout because he left to rush his wife to the hospital for the birth of their child. When the game went into extra innings and the team needed him to pitch, broadcasters famously made a live on-air appeal for him to return. Today in Reds History is presented by @PNCBank

A .307/.405/.629 line over that 162-game run, 49 homers and 93 steals, still gets brought up as one of the great power-speed peaks ever. In 1987 alone Davis went 37-50, one of the very few guys to ever crack 30 homers and 50 steals in the same season.

A play at the plate during Game 3 of the 1975 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati — Tuesday, October 21, 1975, the night of the Ed Armbrister bunt. The game was tied 5–5 in the tenth when Cesar Geronimo led off with a single. Sparky Anderson sent up the light-hitting Armbrister to bunt Geronimo over. The bunt bounced high in front of the plate; Armbrister hesitated, then broke for first — directly into the path of Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk, who was trying to field it. They collided. Fisk threw wildly to second trying to nail Geronimo, and both runners ended up safe. Boston screamed interference. Home-plate umpire Larry Barnett refused to call it, ruling it incidental contact — "interference only when the batter intentionally gets in the way," he told reporters, and the rulebook backed him. NBC's Curt Gowdy roasted Barnett on the air so harshly the network later dropped him. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Pete Rose was walked intentionally, Merv Rettenmund popped out, and Joe Morgan lifted a fly ball deep enough to score Geronimo: Reds 6, Red Sox 5. Cincinnati took a 2–1 Series lead and won it in seven. ⚾ The bunt, the collision, the no-call that still burns in Boston. Was Larry Barnett right? ⚾ 👇️
