Flu season is upon us and it’s time to plan your anti-flu strategy. The first and greatest line of defense against the flu is annual flu shots. Flu vaccinations are the best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and potentially serious complications. Annual vaccines protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. But there are other preventive actions you can take to help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses: 1. Sick? Stay home. Stay home from work, school, and unnecessary outings when you're sick. You can resume normal activities when your overall symptoms are better, and you have not had a fever after 24 hours. 🏡🌡️ 2. Cover your mouth & nose. Influenza viruses are spread mainly through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk . 3.Proper hand hygiene. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 🙌🫧 4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. 👁️👃🏼👄 5. Housekeeping. Cleaning frequently touched surfaces, such as countertops, handrails, and doorknobs regularly can help prevent the spread of some illnesses. 6. Healthy Habits. Get plenty of sleep, keep physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. 🏃🏻🥦 This flu season, stay prepared and stay healthy! #PIHHealth #Flu

October 15, 2026, is Global Handwashing Day 🌎—a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of handwashing to prevent disease and save lives. Hand hygiene is the critical practice of properly washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers. 🫧💦 Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases and can help to prevent diarrheal illnesses and respiratory infections. Germs can spread from person to person or by contact with contaminated surfaces, and proper hand hygiene reduces this risk significantly. This is especially true in healthcare settings where hand hygiene programs protect both patients and healthcare personnel from potentially deadly germs, preventing up to 50% of avoidable infections. 🏥 Hand hygiene should be performed: • Before eating or preparing food • After using the toilet or changing diapers • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose • After touching potentially contaminated surfaces • Before and after caring for someone who is sick By consistently following these hand hygiene practices, you can protect yourself, your loved ones, and the community around you from infectious diseases. Scroll through for a visual aid on proper handwashing techniques. 🙌 #Handwashing #Handhygiene #GlobalHandwashingDay #PIHHealth

#EmployeeSpotlight: Meet Danielle, New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) Residency Program Coordinator and Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) Clinical Nurse Educator at PIH Health Downey Hospital. She helps new nurses transition into practice while supporting their continued growth through education, mentorship, and professional development. For Danielle, PIH Health has been part of her story from the very beginning. “PIH Health is where my story began, where I found my purpose, and now where I have the privilege of helping others begin their own,” she shares. Danielle and her sister were both born at PIH Health Whittier Hospital. She returned as a student nurse in 2017, began her career as a new graduate RN at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in the Cardiovascular Definitive Observation Unit (CVDOU), and later gained experience across PIH Health Urgent Care Centers before transitioning into nursing education at PIH Health Downey Hospital. “From a PIH Health student nurse and new grad myself to now helping shape that same experience for our newest nurses feels incredibly full circle,” she says. Danielle chose nursing with a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Her sister, Brittini, a House Supervisor at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, was one of her inspirations. Today, Danielle is proud to help nurses build the confidence and skills to provide safe, high-quality care. “Watching a nervous new graduate develop into a confident nurse, and later become a preceptor, mentor, or leader for someone else, is one of the best parts of what I do.” Outside of work, Danielle enjoys spending time at the dog park with her “fur baby”, Mia, traveling, trying new restaurants, spending time with family and friends, and getting creative with unit activities and celebrations. PIH Health thanks Danielle for her dedication to nursing education and for helping shape the next generation of nurses. 💙

🏈 While participating in sports like football offers many benefits, including improved fitness, teamwork, and character development, it is also important to recognize the risks involved. Tackle football players often sustain 23 times more high-magnitude head impacts than flag football players during practices and games. These repeated impacts can increase the risk of concussions and spinal cord injuries, as well as knee ligament tears, ankle sprains, and shoulder separations. Parents, coaches, and athletes should understand both the benefits and the risks so they can make informed decisions about participation. If you have concerns about a sports-related injury, head over to PIHHealth.org/Ortho to learn more about our orthopedic specialists or schedule an appointment.
