In March I did this 🧵on what anthropology offers; now I am being made redundant by Goldsmiths I just want to put it out again. I am an anthropologist & do feel I can offer a lot for climate, environment & other work beyond academia - if you see anything, let me know 🙏

This discussion this week has reminded me that:
1. The media will do everything it can to twist the narrative to undermine anyone that stands against the establishment.
After the incredible success the Greens have had in the last year, absolutely ridiculous that every news debate today about if Zack should go.
2. You get far more hassle for calling out racism than for actually being a racist.

A flood has destroyed the town of Salleri in Nepal's Gorkha district early this morning after days of heavy rainfall. This is Nepal's third devastating flood in 6 weeks, a consequence of human civilization altering the flows of water on earth by heating it up with fossil fuels.

There’s a reason why so few truly leftwing politicians are visible in public life. Because the media’s role is to weed them out, discredit them, place them beyond the pale.

The by-election in my home constituency tomorrow is going to be close. Anyone considering voting Lib Dem or WP should seriously reconsider. Your votes could prevent the Starmerite Labour candidate, whose record on everything from housing to Gaza, is appalling, from being elected.

The telegraph and daily mail are telling you to vote Labour in Holborn and St Pancras.
Says it all!
They are terrified of a Green win.
Possibly something to do with their racist billionaire owners?
Ignore the billionaire press.
Vote Green 💚

Remember, there is only a by-election because Keir Starmer didn’t want to stick around after losing the leadership and chose to abandon his constituency for a new job.
Don’t vote Labour again 🥀

Change doesn’t happen because those in power suddenly decide to be bolder - it happens when. Greens push them to be better. And on climate, that couldn’t be more urgent. Vote Green to keep fossil fuels in the ground, where they belong

Every time your phone tells you where you are, it is using a mathematical model of the shape of the Earth.
A Black woman from rural Virginia spent decades building that model by hand, and almost nobody knew her name until she was in her eighties.
Gladys West. She grew up in a sharecropping family in Dinwiddie County and understood early that the alternatives were the tobacco fields or the factory. She finished top of her high school class, which came with a scholarship, and took it.
Her work was satellite geodesy: taking the raw data coming down from orbit and using it to compute, correction by correction, the true irregular shape of the Earth. Not a sphere. Not even a neat ellipsoid. A lumpy thing with gravitational highs and lows.
That model is the foundation the Global Positioning System sits on. You cannot locate a point on a surface until you know precisely what the surface is.
She did this for decades, largely unremarked, and retired in 1998.
She was recognised in 2018, when her sorority mentioned her biography at a function and someone realised what was in it.
The Air Force inducted her into its Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame. She earned a PhD in her seventies.

Great to be on panel with the fab @RohYakobi to discuss priorities for UK’s coming presidency of the G20. It is obscene that climate vulnerable countries forced to spend over 40 times more on foreign debt than on protecting their people from #climate breakdown @bondngo #GPC26

Rent controls are popular. They're common sense. And they're the only way to tackle the scandal of rip-off rents.
Only the Green Party will fight to bring down the cost of rents and make housing affordable for everyone.
Zack Polanski has called for a 3-year brake on private rent increases, restricted to the lowest of inflation, wage growth, or 2% - a move that 65% of Britons support

💯 Burnham and all of us owe huge thanks to @ZackPolanski and Hannah Spencer. Disappointing that some seem to think job over - there is now very little pressure from the left within the Labour party (very few left!) - so we need this from the outside otherwise Labour will revert to the status quo.
Now the Greens and Polanski are off their peak it’s tempting to dismiss as a flash in the pan. But regardless of what happens in Holborn, their influence on political landscape inc yesterdays speech has been outsized - like Farage in the 2010s. Would argue Gorton and Denton result even more consequential than Makerfield. On a par with Clacton 2014
