The statements made by President Trump on Truth Social regarding the Pope were entirely inappropriate and disrespectful. They don’t contribute at all to a constructive conversation. It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine and the principles that govern the moral life. In regard to the concrete application of those principles, people of good will can and do disagree. I would warmly recommend that serious Catholics within the Trump administration–Secretary Rubio, Vice President Vance, Ambassador Brian Burch, and others–might meet with Vatican officials so that a real dialogue can take place. This is far preferable to the statements on social media.
I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty. All that said, I think the President owes the Pope an apology.

Today, Pope Leo XIV canonized St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Their devotion to the Eucharist, their service to those in need, and their joyful witness continue to inspire people of all ages.
These new saints continue to inspire young people and the whole Church. We give thanks to God for these new saints, shining examples of holiness for our time.
May their example guide us closer to Christ.

Here’s an idea: let’s ditch these outdated, insular party endorsement games (DFL and GOP alike) and move toward real primaries where candidates earn support from actual voters, not just insiders. #mnpolitics startribune.com/minneapolis-…

New tariffs just kicked in—up to 50% on allies like India, 39% on Switzerland, 100% on computer chips.
Hiring is stalling. Inflation’s creeping up. The economy’s slowing.
Conservatives shouldn’t cheer economic self-sabotage.

Win for Catholic Charities group in WISC at #SCOTUS this morning. Another unanimous decision - finding that the religious entity couldn't be excluded from tax benefits given to other non-profits in that state.
From the opinion:
It is fundamental to our constitutional order that the government maintain “neutrality between religion and religion.” Epperson, 393 U. S., at 104. There may be hard calls to make in policing that rule, but this is not one. When the government distinguishes among religions based on theological differences in their provision of services, it imposes a denominational preference that must satisfy the highest level of judicial scrutiny. Because Wisconsin has transgressed that principle without the tailoring necessary to survive such scrutiny, the judgment of the Wisconsin Supreme Court is reversed, and the case is remanded for further proceedings not inconsistent with this opinion.

Trying to fit the ideology of the Pope in the context of American politics is a fruitless endeavor.

GOP Rep. Don Bacon (Neb) on Trump pausing US aid to Ukraine tonight —
“Too bad Iran, North Korea and China are not pausing their military aid and economic support. There is an invader and a victim, there is a democracy and a dictatorship, there is a country who wants to be part of the West and one who hates the West. We should be unambiguously for the good side.”

*Ukraine* should’ve “never started” the war? Pardon? Russia invaded Ukraine. This is perhaps a fitting lecture for Russia — the ones who’ve done the killing and demolishing he laments — not Ukraine. I’m open to Trump pursuing an uncomfortable resolution to Russia’s horrible war, but I’m not open to him blaming the Ukrainians for it.
