This is the third article in our series exploring the scientific literature on fluoride’s effects on thyroid hormone metabolism and activity, from early pharmacological bioassays to modern toxicology.

NEW RESEARCH - FRANCE: A new study found that chronic fluoride exposure in juvenile rainbow trout induced temporary disruption of thyroid function (T3 and T4 concentrations) during infection and caused persistent structural changes in the thyroid gland, indicating a lasting physiological vulnerability even after hormonal levels appeared to recover.

SWEDEN: "In southeastern Sweden, nearly a quarter of roughly 4,800 private wells exceeded the World Health Organization guideline of 1.5 milligrams per liter. The researchers also speculate that fluoride in tap water used to dilute juice concentrates may contribute, and that swallowed toothpaste, which typically contains about 1,000 micrograms of fluoride per gram, adds another pathway in small children."

2.5 million pounds of active ingredient PFAS pesticides are applied to California crops each year.
The new law establishes a class-based definition of PFAS pesticides, defining them broadly as "a class of fluorinated organic chemicals containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom."

INDIA: Today was National Fluorosis Day.
The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, through the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), organised a National Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on ‘Fluorosis’ on the occasion of National Fluorosis Day. The workshop brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening prevention, early detection, management and control of fluorosis under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF).

Like other fluoride compounds - inorganic or organic - flupyradifurone affects thyroid hormone metabolism.
Interestingly, a major animal study conducted in China found that the effects differed by sex. Female rats exhibited subclinical hyperthyroidism, while males displayed abnormal hypothyroidism (Xu et al., 2022).
The authors attributed this to the potential agonistic or antagonistic effects of FPF sex-dependent metabolites on liver thyroid hormone receptors.

There are some good aspects to this new study. The spline analysis and explicit exploration of non-linearity are major improvements over studies that assume a single linear dose-response. The authors even include prenatal water arsenic as a potential confounder in sensitivity analysis. But - AGAIN! - iodine and maternal thyroid status are completely absent from an analysis of prenatal fluoride exposure and neurodevelopment, despite being arguably the single most important potential confounder/effect modifier in this context.
ECHO has prenatal urinary iodine data, yet this study does not report whether those data were available for any participants in the fluoride-cognition analysis, nor does it explain why iodine status was not investigated.
BREAKING: A new U.S. study of over 2,500 kids across 23 states, led by a multi-center team of scientists, reports that fluoride in public drinking water during pregnancy is linked to lower cognition scores in children —even at levels considered "optimal" for dental health. The U.S. remains the most fluoridated nation on Earth. It's time for that to change. @SecKennedy @DrJBhattacharya

Once again, ICF is directly involved, having collaborated with the EPA on the systematic literature search and screening, the crucial evidence-selection stages that will determine which studies are included in the assessment and which are filtered out.
ICF is a large consulting firm that has been misleading the public about fluoride toxicity for decades.

Another new study has shown that 8:2 FTOH (PFAS) and sodium fluoride affect Ca2+ homeostasis, potentially affecting insulin secretion. 8:2 FTOH altered intracellular Ca2+ in a dose-dependent, biphasic manner, enhancing it at a lower dose and reducing it at a higher dose, while fluoride increased Ca2+ signalling at the higher dose. Gq/11 is the calcium-transducing G protein principally associated with the GPR40/FFAR1 signalling pathway examined in this study.
Unfortunately, the Discussion by the research team around long-time fluoridation advocate Marilia Buzalaf of the University of São Paulo contains numerous factual errors, unsupported conclusions and misleading interpretations that obscure the significance and limitations of the findings.

This review is astonishingly poor. It omits decades of fluoride-aluminum research, contains no meaningful discussion of G proteins, and includes mis-cited studies, conflicting doses, species, and publication years, alongside numerous technical and grammatical errors. Was it actually peer-reviewed?

And once again, iodine status and thyroid function were not included, even though iodine status may itself influence urinary fluoride concentrations, iodine imbalance can independently contribute to similar neurodevelopmental disturbances, and thyroid disruption was proposed as a possible mechanism. And those are only some of the problems.
"Nearly 40% of nonorganic fruits and vegetables grown in California already contain traces of PFAS pesticides, according to a March report. California is significant because the state supplies nearly half of the vegetables and more than three-quarters of the fruits and nuts eaten in the United States."
