#paperday! (arxiv.org/abs/2109.05034) FIRE dwarfs with young stellar disks also form old + round + in-situ stellar halos, like observations (bit.ly/2XlFO3o) -- but many FIRE dwarfs remain disk-less at z=0. See thread below, but first: many thanks to coauthors [1/4]
Daughter checking out our awesome Caltech Biard lecture from the incredible @RisaWechsler. So proud!

Hi everyone, I'm on the co-organizers of @BlackInAstro and we are working on the website and are looking for Black folks in the space related fields for our profiles section on the site. #BlackInAstro
Please distribute, and consider applying if you're eligible and looking for summer research opportunities. I'm always happy to chat with interested students if you have questions!
Caltech is doubling the number of students hosted in the WAVE Fellows program (thanks to support from several Institute research centers). WAVE aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students in #STEM doctoral studies.

Very excited about the STARFORGE simulations, pushing the boundaries of what we can simulate with star formation led by postdocs @MikeGrudic, David Guszejnov and Prof. Stella Offner. Methods (arxiv.org/abs/2010.11254) & first results on jets (arxiv.org/abs/2010.11249) just out!
Very interesting results from @astro_jenna -- and more theory on why the LMC group might make the Milky Way special
It's paper day! We use the FIRE simulations to look for satellite planes like those observed in the Local Group. We characterize their rarity and lifetimes, and offer explanations for why they are observed. arxiv.org/abs/2010.08571

This beautiful animation from Andrea Ghez's group at UCLA traces the motion of stars closest to our Galaxy's central black hole over 24 years. Persistent work from an entire team that teaches us new things about black holes and provides precise measurements of general relativity.

Congratulations to alumna Andrea Ghez (MS ’89, PhD ’93) on winning the 2020 #NobelPrize in #Physics. Ghez shares half of this year’s prize with Reinhard Genzel “for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy.”
