Cruelty to animals isn't a small thing to look away from. It's a crime, and police are empowered to act on it. Last week we conducted a session for officers at the Haryana Police Academy on exactly that: how Sections 32 and 34 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 give the police real authority - to enter and inspect and hold offenders to account. Enforcement is where animal protection law lives or dies. When the officers on the ground know these powers are theirs to use, animals actually stand a chance. Grateful to the Haryana Police Academy for having us.

How do we prevent an animal health crisis instead of managing one after it breaks? That question ran through the CII India Petcare Summit - India doesn't have enough vets, and veterinary education isn't closing the gap. Better access. Better care. Better lives.

Fish are India’s most farmed - and most overlooked animals. 🐟 This National Fish Farmers Day, we trained 70+ fish farmers to spot signs of stress, identify water-quality problems, and understand what they mean for fish welfare. Better awareness = better welfare.

Back at the Judicial Academy, Assam - this time with Prosecution Officers. Our third workshop with the Academy in collaboration with @PFAppf, and each session has gone deeper. This one focused on the PCA Act, case property procedures, and the regulation of slaughterhouses - the provisions that prosecution officers are most likely to encounter, and most need to know. Grateful to the Academy for the continued partnership.

Much needed and most frequently asked Q&As with @gauri_maulekhi on everything to do with animal welfare and law. Please share far and wide.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been receiving questions from citizens, rescuers, students, lawyers, and animal advocates across India about animal welfare laws - what to do in specific situations, what their legal rights are, how the system works, and what the law actually says. So I answered some of them. In this session, I explain the role of SPCAs, RWA resolutions, citizens’ rights, the recent Supreme Court order, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and much more - as clearly, practically, and factually as I can. If you’ve ever wanted to understand how animal welfare laws work in India, I hope you’ll find this useful. Please watch and share it widely. youtube.com/watch?v=C_lR3cul… @PFAppf @pfaindia

Illegal slaughter just 4.7 km from Delhi Airport is not only animal cruelty, it’s a serious aviation safety risk. Despite rules banning slaughter within 10 km of airports, violations continue unchecked. Our Member Secretary @gauri_maulekhi spoke to @BBCIndia about this issue.

It was a privilege to welcome Hon’ble Member of Parliament @SwatiJaiHind ji to our Delhi office on 19 June 2026. Few public representatives have spoken as consistently and fearlessly for those who cannot speak for themselves. Through her advocacy, Ms. Maliwal has helped bring issues affecting vulnerable animals into the national conversation and has inspired greater public engagement with animal welfare. Our discussions focused on some of the most pressing challenges facing animals today and the policy, governance and institutional measures needed to strengthen their protection. We are grateful for her visit, her continued support, and her willingness to use her platform in service of compassion. With voices such as hers, meaningful change for millions of animals becomes possible. Together, we can continue advancing the timeless Indian ideal of Ahimsa and building a nation that extends dignity, protection and kindness to all living beings. @pfaindia @PFAppf @PFAukd

At the Vegan India Conference in Mumbai, @gauri_maulekhi spoke on community dog welfare and public policy, while @priyankabangari led a session on corporate engagement and private policy. Two tools. One goal - systemic change for animals.

We are grateful for these words of compassion from the highest office. The ground reality for our community animals today, still needs to catch up.
Thank you, @narendramodi ji, for reminding what compassion in practice looks like. The discourse around our community animals has been heavy with anger & fear, but your words steady the ground. Karuna for the voiceless is not weakness - it is our civilisational strength. Thank you, Sir, for being a sensible voice in a hard season. @PFAppf @pfaindia

131-page Supreme Court judgment. 32 mentions reinforcing the Animal Birth Control Rules. 1 line permitting euthanasia for rabid or mortally wounded dogs - and that becomes the headline. Clickbait thrives on fear. The law doesn’t. The architecture of today’s order: ABC Rules upheld, one ABC centre per district mandated, every High Court on compliance watch. This reinforces what has always been the only humane and scientific framework: Sterilise. Vaccinate. Return. Let’s keep our focus where it needs to be. #streetdogs #dogsofindia #factsoverfear

The Hon’ble Supreme Court’s directions in Suo Motu W.P. (C) No. 5 of 2025 place renewed emphasis on implementation, compliance, and strengthening on-ground ABC infrastructure nationwide. Directions include at least one ABC Centre in every district and nationwide monitoring through High Courts. #supremecourt #streetdogs #communityanimals

VIDEO | Delhi: Activist Gauri Mulekhi on Supreme Court order on stray dogs, says, "I think it is good that the honorable Supreme Court has finally reiterated that animal birth control rules, which were first notified in 2001, have still not been implemented well by most states, and strict directions have been given by the honorable Supreme Court to implement the animal birth control rules, every district is supposed to have an animal birth control center, trained veterinarians and capacity commensurate to the dog population in their districts to conduct a properly monitored animal birth control program. The High Courts are now supposed to collect compliance reports from the state governments. Every single High Court will register a suo motu case and the Chief Secretaries and relevant secretaries of the departments will report to the respective High Courts in relation to compliance with animal birth control rules. We are grateful that the court has upheld the animal birth control rules and directed for its scientific and expeditious implementation." #SupremeCourt #StrayDogs (Full video available on PTI Videos - ptivideos.com)

#WATCH | Delhi: On Supreme Court refuses to modify directions to remove stray dogs from public places, Animal rights activist Gauri Mulekhi says, "I think it is a balanced judgment. Earlier in November, the Court had asked for dogs to be summarily picked up and removed and kept in shelters, whatever. Here today, the most stress was given to animal birth control rules. It has been directed that there has to be an animal birth control centre in every district. There has to be trained manpower, trained veterinarians, as well as procedures to be followed, which have been prescribed by the Animal Welfare Board of India. Reporting has to be done, and compliance reports have to be given to the High Courts and the Supreme Court. So the focus on animal birth control rules is very, very welcome, and the rest has been left to the state authorities as to how they want to remove dogs from sensitive areas..."
