NEW:
One would think a congressional report detailing allegations from 11 women tying Trump to a pedophile financier’s sex-trafficking scheme, with 5 women accusing the president of raping them, would lead to round-the-clock media coverage.
Well, you'd be wrong.

President Trump’s trade war with Canada assumed economic size would translate into bargaining power. Ottawa’s refusal to back down, and the strain the tariffs are putting on U.S. border states ahead of the midterms, are opening cracks in the administration’s approach, argues expert @edwardalden.
"With Republicans facing tough midterm election races in northern border states that are heavily dependent on trade with Canada, it is the United States that now appears to be backing down by lifting tariffs that are causing too much economic harm. Other countries that will face at least another two years of Trump’s trade bullying, regardless of the midterm outcomes, have much to learn from Canada’s response," he writes.
"Most of the major economies, from Europe to Japan and South Korea, have cut deals with the United States to accept higher tariffs in exchange for some trade peace. Canada stands alone in resisting U.S. demands. But so far, it seems to be standing tall."

Pope Leo XIV has spent his pontificate warning that democracy cannot survive a passive citizenry, and five days before the midterms his words land squarely on American Catholics.
Father Theodore Hesburgh, who led Notre Dame for 35 years, liked to tell Americans that “voting is a civic sacrament.”
The pope made a similar case from Rome in September, telling the faithful that “we cannot remain as unengaged spectators.”
With Election Day on Tuesday, I’m asking every Catholic to read our voter guide for the battleground races and take the Pope Leo Voter pledge. Then bring someone along to the polls. thelettersfromleo.com/p/why-…

Deservedly scathing op-ed by the NYT:
“If Democrats retake both houses of Congress, and more state governments than they now control, it will tell the world that Mr. Trump does not represent most Americans. It will demonstrate that a country that starts to slide toward autocracy can move back to normalcy, as happened in Hungary this spring. Most important, it will create a desperately needed check on Mr. Trump during his final two years in office.
…
In a 21-month span, he has done more harm to democracy and the rule of law than any other president in the modern era and perhaps longer than that. He has broken his oath to defend the Constitution by trying to rewrite it on his own. He has refused to honor Congress’s power of the purse and misused national security laws for political ends. He has defied federal court orders on Medicaid funding, deportation orders and more. He has dismantled the Justice Department’s legacy as an impartial enforcer of federal law, turning it into an instrument of retribution against his adversaries while canceling investigations into his allies. He has appointed inept sycophants to oversee crucial government functions, including law enforcement, national defense and public health. He has sought to disenfranchise large numbers of voters, claiming fraud that cannot be found, and championed an extreme new approach to partisan gerrymandering. He has physically besmirched the White House by demolishing the East Wing and financing a garish renovation with donations from wealthy allies.”

This is thoughtful reporting from the front lines in Ukraine. War is shape-shifting in front of our eyes. The question is whether the US military can learn and apply in an accelerating adaptive way. And the best way to do that is to continue to support Ukraine. @thecipherbrief

The global response to Musk and Trump's pressure on Ukraine, accompanied by a temporary shutdown of Starshield, was swift.
Here's where things stand now:
🇨🇦 CANADA
The Canadian government has signed a CAD 2.3 billion contract with national satellite operator Telesat to expand its Lightspeed low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation.
Lightspeed was originally developed as a commercial competitor to Starlink and OneWeb. However, the government is now funding the integration of a dedicated, secure military communications system operating in the Ka-band and has already placed an order for additional satellites with Canadian aerospace company MDA Space.
🇫🇮 FINLAND
Finnish company ICEYE, a developer of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, and Nokia have announced a strategic partnership to develop sovereign LEO broadband communications systems for interested European governments.
The project aims to provide European countries with a ready-made platform allowing each government to fully own and control its own satellite communications infrastructure, including encryption, without dependence on foreign providers.
This concept is known as "Sovereign SatCom."
🇪🇺 EUROPEAN UNION
The European Commission has moved toward awarding manufacturing contracts and increasing funding for its sovereign satellite communications network, IRIS².
Airbus Defence and Space has already signed contracts in Toulouse to manufacture the first 66 LEO satellites. Thales Alenia Space has been tasked with developing specialized secure payloads for government applications.
The program has been expanded to 348 satellites, with an additional €4 billion in funding.
🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREA
South Korea has successfully conducted its first orbital launch of the year using its domestically developed Nuri (KSLV-II) rocket from the Naro Space Center.
The rocket simultaneously deployed 14 payloads, including additional satellites for the national NEONSAT constellation and several military CubeSats.
🇯🇵 JAPAN
Japan has allocated approximately $1 billion in subsidies to develop a nationally controlled direct-to-device satellite network.
The system is designed to allow ordinary smartphones to communicate directly with satellites during major earthquakes or military conflicts.
The project involves cooperation between Rakuten and AST SpaceMobile.
🇺🇦 UKRAINE
The UASAT project, an initiative by STETMAN and a consortium of partners, has successfully completed registration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Preparations are now underway for the UASAT-NANO test satellite, which will mark the first step toward creating Ukraine's own sovereign satellite constellation.
🇨🇿 CZECH REPUBLIC
At the same time, agreements with the Czech Republic are being finalized for the joint development of a constellation of optical reconnaissance satellites called Suziria ("Constellation").
Ukraine is also expected to gain access to backup capacity within Europe's GOVSATCOM system.
🇩🇪 GERMANY
German company Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit carrying satellites on September 5.
THE BIG PICTURE
The brilliant strategists Elon and Donnie wanted to show us who controls the red button for satellite internet.
Well, they succeeded.
And in a strange way, perhaps we should thank them.
Because they have reminded the entire world of one simple truth:
Whoever controls your communications can control your future.
And now countries around the world are working to make sure that no single billionaire — or American president — can ever hold that power over them again.
