Manufacturer: “We won’t fix your faulty TV as it’s outside it’s one year warranty.” Right or Wrong? Answer: Both. Your legal rights aren’t with the manufacturer. They’re with the shop you bought it from (so ignore shops wrongly saying ‘take it to the manufacturer). A manufacturer’s warranty is just a voluntary agreement, so it’s correct about the warranty. Yet take it to the retailer and the law states goods are faulty if they don’t last a ‘reasonable length of time’. So, return faulty items within a month and you’re due a full refund, return it after and its repair/ replacement or partial refund. As for what’s reasonable.? It’s what a reasonable person would say it is. Eg in my view an expensive TV breaking of its own accord after a year isn’t reasonable – it should last many years, a 10p whistle breaking after a year is reasonable.
