St. Teresa of Avila was shown a place in Hell that she believed was meant for her. What she experienced was so terrifying that years later, she could barely write about it without feeling the same horror again. ⤵️ She described this vision in her autobiography. She said she suddenly found herself in a long, narrow tunnel that looked like a furnace. The ceiling was low, everything was dark, and the ground was covered in filthy, foul-smelling mud filled with horrible reptiles. At the end was a tiny hole in the wall, almost like a cupboard. And that's where she found herself trapped. The walls seemed to crush her. She could barely breathe. There was no light, no room to move, and no way to escape. But what Teresa said next is what makes her account so frightening. She said everything she saw was almost pleasant compared to what she actually felt. There was a fire burning inside her soul, causing pain so terrible that she couldn't find words to describe it. And the worst part was knowing that this suffering would never end. Teresa believed God had shown her the place her sins had deserved, and what His mercy had saved her from. But her reaction afterward was something you might not expect. She actually thanked God for showing her Hell. She called it one of the greatest gifts He had ever given her. Because after seeing what she believed she had been saved from, the suffering she faced in this life no longer terrified her the same way. But something else happened that changed how she looked at other people. She began thinking about all the souls who were heading toward that same terrible place. And instead of feeling anger toward them, she felt overwhelming sadness. She even said she would willingly die many deaths if it meant saving just one soul from Hell. Imagine... She had seen something so horrifying that she never wanted anyone else to experience it, not even the worst sinner. And that's what makes her vision so important. She had little education and no important position. Yet Jesus entrusted her with a message the world desperately needed: God’s mercy is greater than our sins. But mercy is not permission to stay in sin. The Catholic Church teaches that God desires every person to be saved, but He also gives us free will. A person who knowingly and freely chooses grave sin and dies without repenting of mortal sin remains separated from God. That is why repentance matters, and why Confession is such an incredible gift. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Christ forgives our sins and restores sanctifying grace when we come to Him with true repentance. If someone cannot reach Confession before death, perfect contrition can reconcile that person to God when it comes from love of God and includes the sincere intention to confess as soon as possible. If someone dies in God’s friendship but still needs purification from the effects of sin, the Church teaches that this final purification is Purgatory. Purgatory is not a second chance after rejecting God. It is purification for a soul already destined for Heaven. Saint Faustina spent her life pointing souls back to one truth: never be afraid to return to Jesus. She recorded the messages she received in her Diary and helped spread the Divine Mercy devotion throughout the world. Saint John Paul II canonized her in 2000. Her life leaves us with one urgent reminder: no matter how far you have fallen, while you are alive, the door of repentance is still open. Run to Jesus. Go to Confession.
