Before remote work, some of my coworkers became friends, but most were just colleagues or cordial acquaintances. Working remote, the same. I've met a few in person and made and retained friends I've never met in person.

I think remote work is a cancer not because people secretly hate it, but because I think it continues the trend of isolating everyone from one another. There's a lot of great things that have come from the internet, but it's also brought about a deterioration of the social structure. We don't go out and see each other at the movies, at the mall, at the grocery store, at the restaurants, community events, or even chuch... we don't hang around the water cooler or the lunch room and talk about what was on cable TV the night before that the entire country watched. The kids no longer hang out together after school, they "hang out" online or get lost into their phones. But remote work is the choice of the employer and the employee, it's not something that can be forced either way from a authoritarian perspective.

And when you work for a large company with multiple offices across states and countries, you're going to be driving into a corporate office to get on Teams rather than getting on Teams from your home office.

The company can, of course, force people to relocate or try to limit hiring of teams to specific geographic offices, but this dramatically shrinks the available talent pool.

Maybe it’s because I never gave it much serious thought as a youth, and as an adult it was just a nostalgic cartoon, but I never really caught all the implications in the Sleepy Hollow cartoon that the headless horseman was Brom Bones.

I’m sure I don’t have much of an audience left, but working on a Bushi SFF blog revival. I feel the creative muscles have atrophied and there’s only one way to fix that..

Having been blasted over the past day with arguments (and insults) about the usage of AI, I do find it interesting to see the different tacs:

I have the least amount of sympathy for the “people are too stupid and unimaginative to use AI as a tool” assertion, though many of the comments directed at me seemed to confirm it may be true.

“Why would I want to build something that already exists?” “I can’t think of anything I could use help with.” Therefore the tool is bad? In this case the benefits will be reaped by those who are more imaginative, and detriments to society will be reaped by all.

I think adoption is going to take time, but will speed up as the AI improves. I played around with ChatGPT over a year ago and wasn’t super impressed with what it was at the time. Recently I’ve started using it for personal projects and research and man the utility is astounding.
AI for 99% of people is just three things: 1. Cheating on homework 2. Search engine 3. Slop That's it. The programmers live in a different universe where AI is integrated into literally every part of their lives. To everyone else it just made everything suck.

I think a lot of people missing the point that yeah maybe “normal” people don’t use AI now, but as the accessibility bar gets lower and lower it will permeate normal life

I’m sure I’m not the first to make the observation, but pretty amazing to me that our AI technology seems pretty close to on par with the Star Trek computer in a lot of ways. As I work on some personal projects with ChatGPT, I’m thinking of 90a and 2000s era Trek…

Like with crew members basically telling the computer verbally to run what look essentially like stored procedures, or working with it to generate holograms or run simulations. Like for example…AI art may or may not be “art” but dang if it isn’t a useful scifi tool come to life

Generally pleased, but hope for Lufia they leave the graphics relatively intact. Took a pass on Suikoden because the updated stuff looks like it came out of a mobile port. Seems to be a common design choice these days and I can’t understand it.
We are in a golden age of remasters and I couldn’t be happier about it! It’s amazing that everyone is getting a chance to enjoy these amazing games all over again, or for the very first time!
