Grateful to @OliviaBowden__ and the @TorontoStar for covering our new paper in @CMAJ_Open today. Students in mental health crisis are deserving of hope and help, and that includes flexible, dignified, and humane transfer policies. (1/6)

Psychiatry: poverty, child maltx, benzos, shame, lack of appreciation for complexity and for the human spirit

There are understandable reasons why psychiatry is scrutinized way more than other medical specialties: it, eg, exercises social control over the lives of individuals under its care to a degree exercised by no other specialty; it is subject to more value disagreements... (/1)

Agree totally. Complicating a biological story with social and structural dimensions isn’t denying the biological - it’s recognizing the complexity of how mental disability materializes

I also found it to be inciting a false moral panic. The idea that there is a large number of “woke” psychiatrists who deny the biological dimension of psychiatric conditions is just incorrect. I don’t know of any in the “real” world, outside of a handful of extreme voices online.

It's infuriating to see the head of psychiatry at St. Michael's @UnityHealthTO publicly belittle his younger, often female, often racialized colleagues for providing care that rightly addresses the social determinants of mental health.

For all the doctors saying "I don't care about pronouns," or "it's too hard to remember," here are the facts:
"...for transgender youth, using their chosen name in school, work, home, and with friends... decreased suicide attempts by 65%."
So, you better fucking care.

Some people can’t see racism in health care. A Cree teen male went to the ER bc he was unwell. He sat, became delirious & security was called as they felt he was intoxicated. No vital signs were taken. He died 4ish hours later due to septicemia. I reported this. Nothing happened.

We call on the Prime Minister to lower the flags of this country and declare a national day of mourning. A mass grave containing 250 children was discovered on the site of a former residential school in Kamloops British Columbia!

If we are going to make Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) more accessible for Canadians, we have a duty & moral obligation to make housing, harm reduction services, mental health & income supports, more accessible too.

Med school is odd because I feel like I am incentivized to view people’s suffering as a “learning opportunity”

Being unhoused, or poor, or addicted is not a moral failing. It is our moral failing that we do not see the ways that trauma and systemic oppression contribute to these states. Everyone deserves a roof, a full belly and a community. 4/4

RE: #MedBikini -- let's not forget the disproportionate impact of antiquated notions of "professionalism" on racialized women with curly hair & dark skin, far beyond the posting of bikini pics. Just being myself should not have to be seen as subversive/a political statement. /1

Ummmm I don't think you can say you give a crap about public safety while you literally cover up the crisis of police brutality and anti-blackness in @cityofhamilton...bit of a paradox in my books.
