Article @insideclimate "Boeing has almost completed the demolition of five buildings at its infamous Santa Susana Field Laboratory in Southern California, even as concerns mount among nearby families about potential health harms. The buildings at the former Rocketdyne facility—where one of the worst nuclear meltdowns in U.S. history took place in 1959—were once used for Cold War-era nuclear energy research. Larry Yee, the former chair of the LA Regional Water Quality Control Board, on Wednesday called the site 'a mini Chernobyl in our backyard.'” Read whole article: Link in bio #ssfl #santasusana #818 #805 #sfv @supervisor_janice_parvin @lindseyphorvath @henrysternca @benallenca @caroline.menjivar @agrobbonta @nathanhochmanda

Minimize cancer risks in Los Angeles and Ventura County Boeing's demolition of five buildings formerly used for radioactive experiments at the Santa Susana Field Lab (including a plutonium fuel facility) is an even bigger danger to the public due to the Santa Ana winds. You can minimize the risks of inhaling carcinogenic plutonium-239 dust by running air filters inside and wearing N95 masks outside. Please share. CALL BOEING AGAIN: OCT 12 - OCT 14 This week, we are asking everyone to call or email Boeing again. This time please request the pre-sampling results of the five Area IV buildings to see if there were signs of radioactivity. In a document, Boeing said they would take samples before the demolition. Those results haven't been made public, which in of itself is a bad sign. We want the full results to be made public, including the lab reports, immediately. Please ask Ms. Kamara Sams for "the immediate release of the pre-demolition radiological survey for Boeing's Area IV buildings, including the lab reports" at 818-466-8793 or kamara.sams@boeing.com #ssfl #santasusana #conejovalley #sfv @LindseyPHorvath @vcjaniceparvin @HenrySternCA @BenAllenCA @CarolineMenjiv3 @JesseGabrielCA @AsmPilarSchiavo @asm_irwin @CAgovernor @BradSherman @RepBrownley @NathanHochmanDA @AGRobBonta

Boeing sent thousands of tons of Area IV waste to landfills and recyclers before In 2013, Boeing demolished 6 other buildings in the radioactive Area IV of the Santa Susana Field Lab. There was compelling evidence that these buildings were low-level radioactive, but Boeing cared more about saving money than protecting people. Even low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) can harm people for thousands of years, but LLRW landfills cost much more than less protective landfills where radiation can leech out and pollute the environment. Boeing is about to do it again. They should prove their five buildings (including a plutonium fuel facility) are actually safe,* or use the most protective measures possible for the demolition and disposal. Read the report on Boeing's 2013 demolition by Committee to Bridge the Gap: Demolition of Radioactive Structures and the Disposal and Recycling of the Debris from the SSFL (link in bio) * Boeing must re-test with modern equipment, best methods, and to current regulations, plus timely and full transparency. #ssfl #santasusana #losangeles #conejovalley #818 @supervisor_janice_parvin @lindseyphorvath @agrobbonta @gavinnewsom @senalexpadilla @sencarolinemenjivar @henrysternca @benallenca @travelingnurselex @councilmemberjohnlee @asmpilarschiavo @asm_irwin @congressmansherman @RepBrownley

Please help Monday! We have asked @Boeing multiple times for a date when the demo is starting and they refuse to answer. Please ask Ms. Kamara Sams for the dates of the demolition at 818-466-8793 or kamara.sams@boeing.com. PLEASE SHARE if you find out.

Boeing plans to demolish SSFL's former plutonium fuel facility as an “abandoned building” The Boeing Company will (or has already begun) demolish(ing) five buildings in Area IV at the Santa Susana Field Lab that were used for radioactive experimentation. The 1980s tests to determine if the buildings were safe used outdated equipment, now obsolete regulations, and questionable methods but still found radioactive detections. Regardless, they were declared "abandoned buildings." Boeing will demolish the buildings without any oversight from the DTSC or the Department of Health, and can use regular demolition and disposal methods, according to a 2023 lawsuit - putting the community at risk of exposure to plutonium 239, one of the most dangerous materials on earth. It's now 100% on the shoulders of the community to fight back and demand that Boeing either prove the buildings are safe or use the most protective demolition and disposal measures possible. 1/ Backstory: In 2020 while researching land conservation, I found more than 2,000 acres had recently been conserved by Boeing near LA. I’d never heard of the Santa Susana Field Lab, its contamination or the 1959 partial meltdown of an experimental nuclear reactor there
Boeing and dozens of other companies have granted ‘conservation easements’ on some of the most contaminated land in the U.S. Companies can save millions on cleanups with these deals, arguing no one will ever live there. Neighbors of one site are up in arms reut.rs/3J6SGhr
