This is #ChildhoodCancer Awareness Month. We must use every opportunity to let America know how much their support is needed. It is the number one killer of children by disease. We must give our children a voice. Our childhood cancer community needs parents who have never been affected to join and help us make childhood cancer a National Priority... Day 1 #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth 🎗️
The #1 disease claiming the lives of children in the U.S. is #ChildhoodCancer . Children in the midst of cancer treatment display loving care that is far beyond their years. They need more research/more treatment options.

Congress cut Give Kids A Chance Act, Priority Review Voucher Act, & Accelerating Access to Care Act. None required Federal Funding. The Childhood Cancer community is devastated! This must be first order of business to correct in the 119th @SpeakerJohnson @johnthune @RepJeffries

Dear Friends:
We were elated on December 17th when Congress included our pediatric cancer drug development bills, the reauthorization of the pediatric priority review voucher program and the Give Kids a Chance Act, in the federal end-of-year funding bill. We were so close to victory.
But three hours before a scheduled vote, to the surprise of the country, the funding bill fell apart. What Congress ultimately passed into law was a stripped down bill from which the reauthorization of the pediatric priority review voucher program and the Give Kids a Chance Act had been dropped. Other critical pediatric cancer bills had been stripped as well, including a bill to ensure kids with cancer on Medicaid can cross state lines for treatment.
We went into action. Social media stories blew up the internet. We were covered by CNN, ABC, MSNBC, STATNews, Newsweek, Rolling Stones, The Bulkward.
We had one more chance. At 11:50 pm on December 20th, the last hour of the last day of this Congress, the Senate took up our bills. Senator Rand Paul objected. The vote failed.
The Senate did pass the Gabriella Miller Kids First Act, but all in all, we have gone backwards.
Today, the pediatric priority review voucher program has expired for the first time in 12 years. Now, after yielding 65 new drugs for kids, there is no incentive for companies to develop drugs expressly for kids with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
The Give Kids a Chance Act, which passed in the House in 2022 and 2024c had 235 House cosponsors, had gone through two House hearings, a markup and a House floor vote, is no more. Now, there’s no opportunity for companies to do studies of cocktails of new cancer drugs for kids.
And now, kids on Medicaid with cancer who need out of state treatment may not be able to get it.
January is a new Congress and we will start all over.
Let us now join forces to get these bills passed into law as quickly as possible.

Cutting funding to the childhood cancer community, that is already underfunded, is not the place. Republicans, you’re gonna have to do better. @ChadTucker @MollyGrantham @KIDSvCANCER @Jay7News @JoeBaber1 @HappyQuailPress @realDonaldTrump @elonmusk

After Trump and his cronies torpedoed a bipartisan effort to pass several important health care bills, I went to the Senate floor one last time to try and pass my bill to help children with cancer.
This bill would help the sickest kids, but @SenRandPaul stood in the way. This is today’s Republican Party.
I’ll never stop fighting to put America’s kids first.

Advocates pushing the US government to do more to combat childhood cancer say the CR was the most significant piece of childhood cancer legislation maybe ever. And now it's dead because some unelected billionaire got pissed off on Twitter? How is that a better process?

Proton radiation therapy has been a game changer for Childhood Cancer. A recent Mayo Clinic article highlighted why it is so valuable to use in cancer treatments with the least late term side effects by avoiding radiating good tissues and organs. Unfortunately, Congress cut the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act from the end of the year package (CR). Why? Who knows? The cost is nearly nothing, and the benefits are tremendous for children needing the therapy. It allows those on Medicaid to travel to other states to get most cancer treatments. Proton Therapy is only one example of treatments that may not be available in their home state, but it's a good one. As of today, the states that do not have Proton Beam Therapy facilities include: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Imagine the number of Medicaid Kids living in these states who will face mountains of red tape, delays, and even refusals to get their lifesaving treatments. This needs to be corrected in the new 119th Congress as quickly as possible. Sadly, this is only one of the childhood cancer initiatives affected by the last minute cuts to the (CR). Others include Give Kids A Chance Act and the PRV Voucher (Creating Hope act) initiative created in 2012.
Both of these encourage drug development for childhood cancers and require no federal funding. Those who helped cut these initiatives need to lead the way in correcting their errors quickly. Children fighting cancer can't afford to wait another year or two...
