Restoring lake trout habitat, one spawning bed at a time! 🐟
This week, Watersheds Canada staff and community volunteers came together to restore a lake trout spawning bed on Wollaston Lake, ON.
Using brooms and a high-powered hose, the team carefully cleared away accumulated silt and algae from the spawning bed. Washed river rock was then added to restore the conditions lake trout need to lay their eggs and support successful spawning.
We’re incredibly grateful to the community volunteers who came out to lend a hand and help protect fish habitat. A special thank you to Patrick Walsh, editor-in-chief and brand manager of Outdoor Canada and Outdoor Canada West, for volunteering his time and getting involved in the restoration!
We’d also like to thank Fred McConnell, president of the Wollaston Lake Home and Cottage Association, for his dedication to conservation and all his hard work helping make this project possible.
This project was made possible through financial support from iA Financial, OFAH Community Conservation Fund, and J.P. Bickell Foundation.
All Watersheds Canada fish habitat projects are completed with applicable permits and approvals from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
