There are always differences between a novel and a movie. On home-video discs of the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD, I have an audio commentary comparing them. Despite the differences, I admire the film for succeeding on its own terms. It changed the action-movie genre.

CASABLANCA wasn't just set against World War II—it was overtaken by it. While the film was still in post-production, Allied forces launched Operation Torch and captured the real city of Casablanca fromĀ Vichy French control. Suddenly, the movie's setting dominated newspaper headlines around the world. Recognizing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Warner Bros. moved up the New York premiere so audiences could see CASABLANCAĀ while the city's name was on everyone's lips. The film premiered on November 26, 1942, just weeks after the Allied victory, before expanding into wide release in January 1943. #HollywoodHistory #ClassicHollywood #MovieTrivia #Casablanca

Miles Davis composed the Elevator to the Gallows (1958) score in a single session while watching the film. After noting a rough cut, he gathered 4 musicians without rehearsal & recorded it in one take, creating a landmark in improvised film scoring.

Costume design is always in service of the story. Fashion answers to the marketplace. Costume design helps bring the world of a film to life. Every decision—color, fabric, silhouette—is made to reveal character in a specific moment, under specific circumstances. From that perspective, writing novels and designing costumes have a lot in common. Different mediums. Same goal: To tell a story.
