How will your country's demographics change this century? At Our World in Data we built a tool to let you see for yourself. The UN's assumptions are the starting point. But then you can adjust the three drivers of change — births, deaths, and migration — to what you expect.

Congratulations to the data wizards at @ourworldindata who created this elegant tool so you can adjust fertility, mortality & migration rates for any country to see the impact on population sizes & age structures. This is really, really great!! Check it out!! Excellent tool, terrific write up. The wizards: @sophiamersmann @DanyX23 @_HannahRitchie
How will populations across the world change in the 21st century? 🔧 Explore for yourself with our new interactive tool! Demographers publish projections using assumptions about key demographic changes, most notably fertility rates, life expectancy, and migration rates. But no one knows for sure how many children people will have decades from now, or how migration will shift. So it’s worth asking what the population would look like if things turn out differently from what the UN or other demographers assume. Our colleagues Daniel Bachler and Sophia Mersmann built a population simulation tool that lets you do just that — for every country in the world. Pick a country, adjust the assumptions, and see how the projections change, for both total population and age structure. For instance, what would happen if fertility rates recovered to replacement level, or migration was cut in half?

A great opportunity to work with our founder, Max Roser, and colleagues at Oxford!
We are now looking for a fourth colleague to join our team — a Postdoctoral Researcher at @UniofOxford. It is a great position for a researcher with a broad interest in technology who enjoys carefully building a comprehensive database on technological change. You will be working with my colleagues @Doyne_Farmer, @F_Lafond_, and me at the new @OxMartinSchool Programme on Forecasting Technological Change. If you are interested, we would love to hear from you! And if you know someone, I would appreciate if you share the job offer with them. Thank you.

Our own @_HannahRitchie has a new book about tackling climate change coming out next month! Called “Clearing the Air”, it covers everything from renewable energy and nuclear power to electric vehicles, heat pumps, minerals, carbon capture, and geoengineering. It will be released on 18th September in the UK (stay tuned for when it will be released in other regions!).

💡New feature rolling out: switch between different indicators on our data pages! For example, on our page showing childhood vaccination coverage, you can easily switch between the share and number of children vaccinated (and unvaccinated), and compare across vaccines or focus on a particular one.

💡New feature: now you can embed archived versions of our interactive charts in your website! You could already embed *live* versions of our charts that get updated whenever we update the chart on our site. Now you can choose to embed an archived version of the chart that will never change or update.

I wrote a new piece on how much progress has been made in treating childhood leukemia. The answer is: quite a lot! Before the 1970s, fewer than 10% of children diagnosed survived 5 years after diagnosis. Now most are cured and around 85% survive that long.

💡 Very excited to announce new features: better interactive maps! 🗺️ – Enhanced country/region selection with several sorting options and a bar chart preview – Selecting a country highlights it and shows its value on the map – Zooming to your selection brings up a 3D globe view 🌍
