Regardless of that debate: injuries and damage can compromise the fish's welfare and even lead to death. 2Pain and stress response: Dr. Lynne Sneddon demonstrated in 2002 that rainbow trout have nociceptors, and later extended this to many other fish species; in 2021 she concluded that science has now definitively shown that fish suffer pain. Research from Wageningen also shows that caught fish sometimes remain conscious for up to two hours after capture, even though they no longer move and appear dead, stress can suppress the response without removing the pain. 3Exhaustion and oxygen deprivation: during the fight phase "Playing" a fish (tiring it out before reeling it in) causes prolonged physiological stress and oxygen deficiency in the muscles. 4Suffocation and damage from being out of water: Fish are not adapted to breathe air; every second out of water (for a photo, to remove the hook) is functional suffocation, often accompanied by damage to the mucous layer and scales that leaves them vulnerable to infection afterward. 5Mortality after release ("catch and release"): Despite the idea that releasing fish is animal-friendly, some still die from the stress, oxygen debt, or infections sustained, often unnoticed, far from the angler. 6Collateral damage to other animals: Fishing lines and hooks left behind by anglers entangle and injure birds, otters, and other animals, sometimes fatally, as has also been explicitly noted in parliamentary documents concerning incidents with abandoned fishing tackle. 7Use of live bait: Worms and maggots are threaded live onto the hook, a practice rarely included in the welfare debate but which nonetheless constitutes animal suffering. 8Storage in keepnets: Caught fish are sometimes kept for hours in a confining keepnet before being released or taken home, causing additional stress and oxygen deprivation.
