Uh, because Homo sapiens have a long *evolutionary* history with spoken language — which is *natural* — whereas reading and writing are very recent — and are NOT natural.

How many times have we defended instructional practices because adults LIKE teaching that way, despite evidence that kids aren’t learning? Project Follow Through showed us what happens when kids actually master skills. We keep protecting adult preferences while children pay the price. #SoldAStory

This idea--build reading instruction around the child's interest--is how I was trained as a teacher, and what we did in the low-performing South Bronx public school where I taught. It failed and turned bright, capable kids into non-readers. I have spent the last 20 years working against it.
“Find out what the child is interested in. Let the child bring his own book, the book he loves, you know, see if he can read, see if he understands.” That's how one critic of direct instruction says we should teach kids to read in Episode 3 of Sold a Story. It sounds lovely. But ask one question: What about the kid who doesn't have a book? What about the child with no shelf at home and nobody reading to them at night? The one who's already behind in 1st grade and knows it? "Follow their interests" works for kids who already read and have every advantage. For everyone else, it's a door that never opens. This is what adults want reading instruction to look like, because it feels warm, natural, and easy. But the data is clear. Kids learn to read through explicit, systematic teaching of how our language works. Every child deserves that, not just the lucky ones. When we choose what feels good for adults over what works for children, kids pay the price. Children over comfort. Evidence over ideology. 📚 #ScienceOfReading #LiteracyNow #ReadingJustice #EveryChildCanRead #ScienceOfReading

Feeling like you're doing something is different from *actually* doing something. Teaching young people to virtue signal is what progressive educators do best.
Thank you to Lakeridge High School’s Students Demand Action for inviting me to join today’s walkout in support of the Bend community and doing more to prevent gun violence.

Don't tell kids they're smart. Teach them so they KNOW they're smart.

A student asked author Frank McCourt, a longtime NYC high school teacher, why they had to read a particular book. “You’ll read it for the same reason your parents waste their money on your piano lessons,” he replied. “So you won't be a boring little shite the rest of your life.”
As I get older I continue to stray away from the idea that everything we learn in school needs to be useful when we get to adulthood Yes there is fluff in school and we are not going to use everything we learn -- some things should probably be cut But can't we learn things for the sake of learning itself? Physics, chemistry, etc. are amazing and if taught well can be so fascinating and beautiful I took a classics class in college (because I had no other choice), was dreading it, and it ended up being one of my favorite classes I've ever taken I don't need what I learned for my adult life but I'm so happy I took the class since my professor was amazing and made the class an incredible experience There doesn't always need to be a means to an end Learning can be the thing itself

At least 40 people are facing federal charges for conspiring to defraud the United States of more than $3 million in fraudulent food stamp purchases. "When SNAP benefits are stolen, real families go without food," U.S. Attorney Scott Bradford said. "That is unacceptable."

This makes a point I've stressed since OJP began: They are — at the root — too **biased** to provide truly objective reporting.
The Oregon Journalism Project retracted its story claiming that a viral video of Washington County Commissioner Nafisa Fai was a deepfake.

Brad Hicks is a Mark Hatfield kind of Republican that can bring balance grounded in common sense to Oregon’s politically extreme Senate and mature leadership to the Oregon GOP.
Brad Hicks shares his grandfather’s view of conservation: loggers don’t want the last tree cut, hunters don’t want the last deer taken, and fishermen don’t want the last fish caught. Stewardship and livelihood can depend on the same thing — resources that last.

Spectacular Nature piece on why AI is not conscious and probably will never be. Three arguments: 1) Intelligence is not consciousness. Intelligence is about solving problems. Consciousness is about having subjective experiences. AlphaFold can solve super difficult problems. By contrast, our brains performs complex operations entirely outside awareness. Problem-solving and consciousness are two separate things. 2. Biology is essential. Our brains are alive, down to every cell. Their activity is inseparable from the living tissue that produces it. The idea that consciousness can be reproduced simply by running the right computations on silicon components who do not fight for their life is a very far fetching and, I would add, almost religious, assumption. 3) The physical organization may matter more than the computation. According to integrated information theory, consciousness requires specific causal relationships between a system’s physical components. The computer architectures running today’s AI lack this organization. The comparison with AlphaFold is particularly revealing: Almost nobody things AlphaFold is conscious, despite its inner working is very similar to an LLM Why? Because it does not speak. LLMs do speak like us and therefore we fall into an illusion: Since they speak like us, they must be like us. But this inference is wrong. LLMs are just a series of matrix multiplications. They are not conscious, and they will never be. * Paper in the first reply

Keith Jarrett’s solo performance of “Over the Rainbow” in Tokyo in 1984 is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding and moving piano solo covers of all time. Rather than simply restating the familiar melody, the legendary pianist infused the piece with new life through his brilliant improvisation, refined harmonic structure, and profound emotional depth.

If THIS is not a reason to vote Republican, I'm not sure what will convince you. 🤷 The Oregon Democrat plan for healthcare would raise marginal tax rates to 70%+. You won't be able to choose your doctor, and the inept members of government will be in control of your health. Vote wisely.
