Jesus was a Jew, preached from Jewish Scripture, worshiped the God of Israel, and taught primarily among Jews. Mary, the Twelve Apostles, Paul, and essentially the entire earliest Christian community were Jewish. Christianity therefore did not begin as a separate Gentile religion competing with Judaism. However the decisive claim is that Jesus is Israel’s promised Messiah and the incarnate Son of God, and that in Him the Old Covenant reaches its intended fulfillment. Jesus explicitly says, “I have not come to abolish [the Law and the Prophets] but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). Christians consequently understood Israel’s Temple, sacrifices, Passover, priesthood, kingship, prophets, and covenant as realities that ultimately pointed toward Christ. Passover culminates in Christ’s sacrifice and the Eucharist; the Davidic kingship culminates in Christ; and the covenant with Israel opens through Christ to the nations. The major historical turning point was the conversion of Gentiles. The apostles concluded at the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15 that Gentiles did not need to become ethnic Jews, receive circumcision, or observe the entire Mosaic ceremonial law before becoming Christians. They entered God’s covenant people directly through Christ, Baptism, faith, and the Holy Spirit. Paul therefore says that Gentile Christians have been “grafted” into Israel’s olive tree and that those belonging to Christ are Abraham’s offspring. Which made it a global religion of salvation. Anyone. Who wishes to now know God and be saved, is welcome and able to be apart of His eternal family and share/participate in His divine nature. The full revelation: We are all His creatures. Christianity then spread like a wildfire, rapidly throughout the Roman world. After Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70, the separation accelerated. Rabbinic Judaism increasingly organized Jewish religious life around Torah, synagogue, and rabbinic tradition, while Christians organized around Christ, the apostles and their successor bishops, Baptism, and the Eucharist. The Bar Kokhba revolt of AD 132–135 widened that separation further. So Catholic and Orthodox Christianity understands the sequence essentially as Israel → Messiah → Jewish apostolic Church → New Covenant → incorporation of the Gentile nations → worldwide Church. Christianity’s claim is therefore not that Judaism was simply discarded and replaced with an unrelated religion. It is that the God of Israel fulfilled His promises to Israel in Jesus Christ and, through Israel’s Messiah, extended His covenant to every nation on earth. And showed us His actual character, heart, and intention for why reality exists, who we are, what life is for, and what its ultimate Ontological purpose is. Seamlessly.
