On Sunday, we gave thanks to our OC Healthcare & Mental Health Professionals! 🩺⚕️ Presided by Bishop Kevin Vann, the annual White Mass honored those who serve in the sacred work of healing, recognizing the many contributions of our healthcare community: doctors, nurses, technicians and all medical personnel. The White Mass tradition in the U.S. dates back to the 1930s with the formation of the Catholic Medical Association. 🙏St. Luke, patron saint of physicians and surgeons, pray for us!

Mater Dei High School is breaking ground on some exciting new campus upgrades! On Friday, October 16, Bishop Vann blessed and attended a groundbreaking ceremony for new building projects at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. The projects, which are more than 30 years in the making, include a 32,000-square-foot Performing Arts Center with a 550-seat theater, five new tennis courts next to the Meruelo Athletic Center and a new Campus Security Center. This important investment, part of the school’s Spirit of Mater Dei Campaign, will give the theater, dance, choir and instrumental music programs a new home and bring the tennis program back to campus. 🙏 Congratulations to the entire Mater Dei community! Join us in praying for these projects and for the students who will learn and grow in these new spaces.

Last Wednesday, Bishop Kevin Vann blessed the new Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Christ Cathedral. 🙏 The special blessing began with a Mass celebrating the second anniversary of the dedication of the St. Callistus Chapel, followed by a Eucharistic procession to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Located at the base of the Crean Tower, the chapel now offers 24/7 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The space features a new marble stand holding a monstrance with the fully visible Eucharist. Christ Cathedral is now the fourth site in our diocese offering Perpetual Adoration, joining St. Angela Merici, St. Martin de Porres and St. John the Baptist. The Diocese of Orange joins Catholics around the world in praying for our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, as he recovers from surgery and receives treatment following his lung cancer diagnosis. We are grateful for the skill and care of his medical team, and for the positive news that the operation went well.   We ask all our faithful as well as all people of good will to remember our Holy Father, along with those who care for him, in their prayers.   May the Lord grant him strength, healing and peace. Amen.

Blessed Archbishop Fulton Sheen has returned to Christ Cathedral! 🙏 In honor of his recent beatification, Christ Cathedral hosted veneration of Blessed Sheen relics, vespers and a blessing ceremony for a Sheen statue on Oct. 6. Members of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, of which Blessed Sheen was also a member, joined us for the celebration. Blessed Archbishop Sheen preached on this campus during its Crystal Cathedral era, where he spoke to an ecumenical congregation at the Arboretum in 1972. The bronze statue, commissioned by the Crystal Cathedral in the 1990s, has returned to the grounds near the Arboretum thanks to a generous loan from the Santiago Retreat Center. Fr. Al Baca, episcopal vicar of ecumenism and inter-religion, reflected on Blessed Sheen’s legacy, noting that he was “building bridges with other Christian leaders and communities” before ecumenism was a normal part of Catholic life. Yesterday, we gave thanks for our OC Legal Community! The 38th annual Red Mass hosted by the St. Thomas More Society took place at Christ Cathedral on October 5. The Mass, presided by Bishop Kevin Vann, recognizes the Catholic faithful within the legal community, such as judges, lawyers and paralegals. The name “Red Mass” was taken from the brilliant scarlet vestments worn by the Mass celebrant and Lord High Justices in England, where Red Masses have been celebrated since around 1310. In Orange County, the tradition began in 1988 with many jurists and members of the Bar actively participating. 🙏 Let us continue to pray for these individuals as they serve our OC community. 🗓️ Be sure to join us for the White Mass for Healthcare and Mental Health Providers on Sunday, October 18 at 3PM in the Christ Cathedral Arboretum!
