Five years in prison for a deleted Facebook comment wasn’t enough. Prosecutors pushed for Sharia, and 24-year-old Anojan Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan, is now on death row in Saudi Arabia. The screenshot that put him there was sent from his own country. Watch:

Remembering Malathi — 10 October 1987. Malathi was 20 when she died. She is remembered as the first female LTTE cadre to die in combat. Her anniversary is observed as Tamil Women’s Awakening Day. The significance of women entering an armed struggle needs to be understood within a society that often expected women to obey, remain silent and leave political decisions to men. Their participation challenged assumptions about who could lead, make decisions and take responsibility for the future of their people. But that also leaves us with a question: what does true liberation mean for women? To me, it means being able to speak without being silenced. To make decisions about our own lives and bodies. To live free from violence, harassment and control. To have an equal voice in our homes, our organisations and our political future. We cannot speak about liberation while asking women to tolerate oppression within our own community. Women’s rights cannot be put aside until some later date. As a mother of two Eelam Tamil daughters, I want them to know our history. I also want them to grow up knowing that their opinions matter, their choices belong to them, and leadership is their right too. Remembering Malathi should make us reflect on the lives lost and on our responsibility to women living today. What are we doing to make the freedom we speak about real for them?

Lmao the hatred is real. But I'm not surprised because if she has identified herself as "Sri Lankan Tamil/Sri Lankan" the outlets would have reported about it and would proudly claim her 😂 can't claim now because she's been loud abt being Eela Tamil and the genocide
Seems like some Sri Lankans are using AI tools to try and mobilise against Maitreyi Ramakrishnan - all because she has been open about her Eelam Tamil roots.

There is a very serious situation with Sri Lankan Sivarasa Anojan who faces death penalty in Saudi Arabia. Earlier today I saw this news being shared by individuals & not reported by any news media. @swasarul has written this post & I asked in which news media she saw it.

This is how Thileepan started his hunger strike. Striding up to the stage with confidence and a smile on his tace. From this moment on he would not take a crumb of food or a drop of water. He knew he may die. But we was prepared to face death for his people. This is what peaceful, determined resistance looks like.

🚨 Sri Lankan Army admits soldiers committed crimes in Haiti as troops return The Sri Lanka Army has acknowledged that its soldiers committed crimes against Haitian children during previous peacekeeping deployments. "Those who were accused of such crimes were tried in the internal military court, and later they were dismissed," the army spokesman told the Sunday Times. No soldier has ever been criminally prosecuted. A 2007 UN investigation implicated at least 134 Sri Lankan personnel in the sexual exploitation and abuse of Haitian children, some as young as eight, with one boy abused by more than a hundred soldiers. Every contingent commander was later promoted. The army screened its own personnel for the current deployment, "in the absence of a dedicated vetting mechanism".

If someone wanted to prove the #SriLanka govt & Office of Missing Persons weren't serious about justice for the disappeared, they couldn't have planned this any better: officials making promises inside, police manhandling & expelling protesting families outside.
🚨Sri Lankan police remove Families of the Disappeared from Jaffna protest The Sri Lankan police forcibly intervened as protesters attempted to display their banner outside the District Secretariat. The protest was organised by the Association of the Relatives of the Enforced Disappeared in the North and East, as the OMP held its event inside the District Secretariat auditorium. The event, was attended by Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Minister and Jaffna District Coordinating Committee chairman Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vedanayagan, several NPP parliamentarians and OMP chairman Mahesh Katulanda. Protesters rejected compensation and death certificates offered through the OMP, insisting that such measures could not substitute for answers concerning their missing relatives. They called instead for the fate of those who had been surrendered to the military to be established, while condemning what they termed the OMP’s “deception”.

As if it's not bad enough that decades later, families have no idea what has happened to their children and loved ones, they have to endure being manhandled and pushed out of Govt offices, by public funded officials, when trying to seek answers for, or protest against the OMP,

In the 1971 war, India lost a warship at sea. Its sonar had not been able to find the submarine that sank it. India then tried to buy better sonar. The countries that made it would not sell. So the Navy told one of its own officers to build it himself. His name is Arogyaswami Paulraj. He was born in Pollachi, a small town in Tamil Nadu. He joined the Indian Navy as a teenager and stayed for about 30 years. The Navy spotted him early and sent him to the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi for a master's degree. His professors told the Navy not to stop there. He finished a doctorate. After the 1971 war he was given the sonar problem. He had no foreign help, no foreign equipment and no permission to buy either. His team built the system from the ground up. It was called APSOH. It went into the fleet in 1983. It was not a compromise. It is still considered one of the best sonars in the world. He went on to set up 3 national research laboratories in India, in computing, artificial intelligence and military electronics. India gave him the Padma Bhushan. Then he left the Navy and joined Stanford University in America as a postdoctoral researcher, starting again at the bottom. While running wireless experiments there, he noticed something odd in his results about how signals could be separated from one another. He followed it. What came out of it is called MIMO. In simple terms, instead of one antenna sending and one antenna receiving, you use several at both ends at once, and the signals stop fighting each other and start carrying far more data. That is the foundation of every WiFi connection and every 4G and 5G phone on the planet. The chairman of the Marconi Society put it plainly. Every WiFi router and 4G phone today uses MIMO technology pioneered by him. He founded a company on it, which Intel bought. He founded another, which Broadcom bought. He holds around 80 patents. He has the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the Faraday Medal, and a place in the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame. The internet in your house is running on his idea right now, and almost nobody in this country knows his name.

The morning after. Sencholai had been designated a humanitarian zone, its GPS coordinates handed to the Sri Lankan government. UNICEF and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission both confirmed those killed were schoolchildren. This is what sixteen bombs left behind, parents searching for their daughters, a people shattered. Twenty years on, not one person has been held to account.

#SriLanka is responsible for some of the world's worst crimes against humanity. In a single horrific event, state forces executed 17 aid workers who were simply trying to help the vulnerable. This remains the deadliest targeted attack on humanitarian staff in history. #justice

🚨 EU delegation granted access to Chemmani mass grave as tally reaches 454 A delegation from the European Union is to visit the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna on Wednesday morning, after the Jaffna Magistrate's Court granted permission for the inspection on Monday, in the latest instance of international attention on a site where excavations continue to unearth evidence of atrocity. The visit comes amid sustained calls from Tamil families, human rights groups and international figures for independent international oversight of the investigation, given long-standing concerns that domestic mechanisms lack the credibility to deliver accountability. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, visited the site in 2025. The delegation is expected at the site in the morning, where excavations are continuing under the court-authorised third phase of investigations. To date, 454 skeletal remains have been found, of which 440 have been fully exhumed.

🚨 Footage shows military selling produce from occupied Tamil land, contradicting parliament claim Footage seen by the Tamil Guardian appears to show Sri Lankan military personnel selling large quantities of vegetables grown on military-occupied Tamil land to a Keells collection centre in Jaffna, directly contradicting claims the deputy defence minister made in parliament only last week. The video shows soldiers transporting and handing over agricultural produce at the collection centre in Urumpirai, along the Palaly Road. It surfaced just days after the deputy defence minister, Aruna Jayasekara, rejected allegations that the military commercially exploits the land it occupies in the North-East, telling parliament that cultivation within military camps was carried out solely for the army's own consumption.
