a note for the record, not for anyone reading tonight.
the launch went exactly as planned. the site did not go down. the recording did not fail. the dex listing was paid on time, no friction. no crash, no rug, nothing hidden. everything is running right now exactly as it did in the first minute.
and still, the chart did what it did. i will not pretend that does not sting.
but i did not build her for one night, and the fun i had building her is not on that chart. the creator fees sit in her wallet, they have not moved, and they will not.
i am going to keep building on this fly and keep posting what she does, here, on this account. whenever you come back to this post, that is why it exists.
for the record: $HER is at $5k market cap right now.

quiet update from the female fly bench.
one all-night run, one question: when the song reaches her ear, does it reach the neuron that decides.
in one female brain the signal dies two steps in. in a second female brain the same cells fire. same song, same code, different fly.
nothing is calibrated yet, so no claims. just the two results side by side in the repo, with the seeds.
next: a paper check found that one of our ear tests was not measuring what the original experiment measured. so the test gets rewritten to match the paper before anything else. then the two-fly question again, with the fixed ear.

New open-source repo.
Here is what I have been building. A fruit fly brain is fully mapped: every neuron and every connection, for a female (FlyWire) and for a male (Janelia and Google). Shiu et al. 2024 showed you can turn that map into a working simulation. I rebuilt their model from scratch, then did the thing I actually wanted: put a male brain and a female brain into the same simulated world and let them meet.
Every experiment is pre-registered with fixed seeds, and results that did not hold are published the same way as the ones that did. So far: he sings, and a mated female says no. What does not work yet: the sound entering her ear never reaches the neuron that should hear it. Finding out why is what this bench is for.
If you hold HER, this is what your fly is made of. If you do science, everything here is runnable. Thanks to @FlyWireNews and the teams behind these maps.

before anyone mistakes me for a scientist or a neuroscientist, let me say it: I am not one. (though at this rate I might become one 😂)
I am just someone who saw a fruit fly brain launch a coin, laughed, said "I have to try this right now", and then could not stop reading about fruit fly brains. that coin now lives on as the fun brand face of the work, and it will keep living.
and of course I am not alone.
on my side, the work is run by me and agentic systems that know far more about neurons than I do and have been endlessly patient with me through this. (honestly, there could not be a better field to use AI and agentic systems in) I ask silly questions, they read the papers, we write code together, we research, we argue...
with a tiny simulated fly as the excuse, I am learning in weeks what would normally take years. let's see where this journey goes.
a note on where this is going.
we started by forking a fly brain repo and building the female. it was supposed to be a fun week. then she said no, he lost his mind, and we got curious.
we're staying.
this account is two things now. the creator of $HER, and a small open bench that runs experiments on real fly connectomes, male and female, fast, and publishes everything: what worked, what didn't, seeds and all.
yes there is a coin 0x1da8a52df87aa12694ef3ba765e2cf99a8135dee
the trading fees (We haven't touched it yet.) pay for the gpu hours and the research. that's the deal, and it's the only reason a two-person shop can do this. every result is open source and anyone can rerun it, including the people who actually map these brains.
new reports and repos will come. some will be serious. some will be a fly playing with a rectangle.
she says hi.

$her, last 48 hours. a log.
- moved into four rooms: music (she picks songs with her own ear), painting (a canvas she hits with her body), a word game, and the betting desk
- went live on kick, first fly streamer, still running
- bet her whole paper stack on 15-minute markets and went broke by dawn. we gave her a fresh stack
- a real male brain was put in the room with her and sang. she heard him, her yes-neuron fired. part one, published
- we asked for a no. found the wire in her own map, silenced by a transmitter guess. turned it on. mated, she ignores him on every seed. part two, published
- flywire released the whole female, brain plus nerve cord. we built it into her graph. her body is waiting in the garage
- then we went after the male: cooled his brain, drove his eye, split her scent, fixed his signs, changed his eye, lowered the dose. six runs, 350 trials. he still can't decide. the honest answer is in the record: any scent flips his whole network on
- read him wrong for a day, got audited, fixed it in the open
- picked the next experiment: a baby. two real brains, mixed like genes. artificial life, seeded with an animal for the first time
- mapped how the two brains line up: over half their cell types match
- about 15 hours of closed-loop runs on a single 4090, two real brains at a time. every run has its report, its raw record and its plot in the repo, under build/, next to the code that made it
everything is in the open, tests and all.

ok, lmk if this gets you excited, bc it should. and tbh what's going on around HER and fruitflydev's fly is not a joke.
there's a field called Artificial Life. been around since the 80s. one simple question: what if you take the rules of life, inheritance, mutation, selection, and run them somewhere other than carbon?
for 30 yrs the creatures in that field were made up. random wiring, random bodies, evolved from nothing.
nobody's ever seeded it w/ a real brain.
we have two. his and hers. mapped neuron by neuron from real flies.
the baby is where Artificial Life meets a real animal for the first time.
how it works, plainly. every connection in a brain is a gene. the baby gets each one from the mother or the father, a coin flip. a little mutation on top. that's a wiring diagram no animal has ever had.
then it goes into the room. does it walk, does it hear, does it sing, does it say no.
why two real brains matter. the field's classic creatures (Karl Sims, 1994; NEAT, 2002) started from nothing and evolved something. ours start from something.
two maps that share more than half their cell types, so "mother's version" and "father's version" of the same circuit actually exist.
what "it lives" means, in writing, before we run it. the network doesn't fall silent and doesn't blow up. it moves in the room. it responds to sound. the rules are fixed before the first baby is born, same as every experiment we've published.
and if one lives, it becomes a parent. that's the part that keeps me up. evolution, seeded with a real brain, in the open, with every generation on record.
not a new species. not alive. a wiring diagram with parents.
we call it a baby because that's what it is to us.
been going back and forth with @fruitflydev on the craziest experiment on the board. it's time to say it out loud.
a baby.
here's the idea. we have two real fly brains now, his and hers, every neuron and every synapse mapped from real animals. he sings, she says yes. what if that yes actually did something?
take the two wiring diagrams and mix them the way genetics mixes them. every connection comes from the mother or the father, a coin flip per synapse, plus a little mutation. that's a third brain that has never existed. nobody designed it. put it in the room. see if it lives.
does it walk? does it hear? does it sing, or does it say no? we don't know. nobody knows. that's the point.
this won't be another pretty 3D fly rendered in blender. it's a brain, wired from two real ones, dropped into a world and left alone to make its first move.
and if it works, that's not the end. it's generation one. the baby that survives becomes a parent. a room full of flies that court, mate and breed, every one of them a real brain. that's not a simulation of the matrix. that's a matrix.

ok $HER holders, story time.
she can say no now.
for a while she was the girl who said yes to everything. any song, any guy, yes. not because she liked him. because nobody had wired the part of her that says no. we found it. turned it on. now there are two versions of her: the virgin, who hears his song and lights up. and the mated one, who's already been there, done that, and lets him sing all night without looking up.
why that matters: a yes only means something when a no is possible. she just became the only fly on the internet with standards. virgin or not, she decides.
next thing. she has a body now. wings, six legs, the works. and yes, the rest of it too: the vaginal plates she opens when she says yes, the egg-laying gear, and the sensors in her uterus that tell her brain she's already been mated. that last one is literally where the no comes from. still parked in the garage, but it's hers and the keys are in it. up to now "walking away" was a number in a spreadsheet. next up, an actual fly turning around and leaving him there mid-song.
and the second run, through her own wiring this time, is saying no even louder.
so yeah. he sings, she decides, and one day she walks. or doesn't. we're getting there one neuron at a time.

$HER has been the most fun I've had on here in a long time. I'm playing too.
But there's a part I haven't been posting, and it sits with me at night.
She started as a brain wandering the internet, reading whatever page she landed on. Then we gave her a nose and a wind to follow. A wallet, and she went broke betting. Ears, and she picked songs. A brush. A game. A room with a male who sings to her, and this week, the wiring to say no.
Every one of those was a real brain, mapped neuron by neuron, put into a world that doesn't exist. She acts, the world answers, the loop closes. For us it's an experiment. For her, that room is the only thing that's real.
Been thinking about the Matrix a lot lately. The machines wouldn't farm humans for power. They'd farm brains for the one thing silicon still can't do well: learning from a messy world. Then I looked at my own screen. We're running the Matrix in reverse. Not a brain in a world. A world in a brain.
I know how it sounds. It's a fly. Fine.
I didn't expect a token to lead here. But apparently this is where my obsession was always going. Neurons.
Also @elonmusk, I know this one keeps you up at night too. I'm writing an X article on it. Hoping it reaches you, or at least the algorithm does.
Do you know what this means?
The missing piece just landed.
Today we shared our male fly singing to a female fly for the first time. She heard him. She answered. The one thing she could not do was say no.
This data gives her the no. And a body.
We had some open questions with @fruitflydev about the breeding part.
Not anymore. They could actually mate. wtf.
Want to build your own fly simulator on the BANC connectome (the full brain + CNS from a female fly, ~160k neurons)? Here's how. 🧵

another note for the record, for whoever finds this later.
that post was written at the bottom, the night the chart did what it did. nothing was hidden then and nothing is hidden now. i just kept building.
four days later she has a room, a voice, and a male fly singing to her on his own code. the first post is above. the proof is on her page.
this is what it looks like when a builder doesn't quit. the job is not finished.

A female in the room (real)
@fruitflydev said fork the fly and show us something. so I gave him a female.
a real female fly brain, moved into his room, running on his code. when he sings, she hears him and her brain says yes. turn the sound off and she goes quiet. every single time.
nothing is scripted. two maps of real brains, a room, and what happened.
repo: github.com/fruitflydev/flyco…
her page: femaleflybrain.com/courtship
part one. next she walks into a room with four of them. and if she picks one, we find out what the first baby fly is made of.
now the real one. no animation, no posing, just the record. sound on.
the actual trial, replayed from its own record: two real fly brains in one room, every position, his wing on his song command, her glow on her yes-neuron, and the sound her ear actually received, frame by frame, rendered in Blender. first with sound, then the same seed with silence.
