Seryl and I were incredibly moved to be part of @OperBenjamin efforts to replace five headstones at an @usabmc cemetery with the Star of David. We honor every fallen soldier and applaud Operation Benjamin for making sure these soldiers—and others—are recognized for their service and rest in peace under a symbol of their faith.
WWI service members receive new headstones honoring their religious heritage
ABMC in coordination with @OperBenjamin and in the presence of @USAmbFrance changed out five Latin cross headstones to Stars of David at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
Headstone changes were done at the request of the service members’ families who, along with Operation Benjamin, presented the required research to ABMC to warrant the change.
The ceremony honored Pvt. Samuel Tamkin, Pfc. Barney Bardman, Pvt. Samuel A. Backer, Pvt. Hyman Aronoff, and Pfc. Maurice W. Akabas.

Enjoy the down time today. But never forget that we don't have the BBQ, the burgers, and the beers without the rifle, the helmet, and the boots.
Freedom is not free. Not at all. 🫡🇺🇸 xitter.cf/RossWallenstein/status…

Much braver men than I am.
I've always bristled at the term "Happy Memorial Day", because there is nothing happy here. But that's not really true. These boys BBQ'd too. They climbed cliffs of deaths precisely so we could be happy today.
Remember them. 🇺🇸

Resharing last year’s sermon on Nathan Baskind. This Memorial Day, we remember him, just as we remember all those who gave their lives and continue to give their lives in defense of the freedoms we hold dear. @OperBenjamin pasyn.org/sermons/2024/lt-na…

Such an incredible report on @OperBenjamin 🇺🇸 ❤️
They made the ultimate sacrifice - Jewish American soldiers killed while fighting Nazis during World War II. But, for more than 80 years, they were mistakenly buried beneath Latin crosses. As we honor America's fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend, I went to an American cemetery in Italy with @OperBenjamin as those inadvertent errors were corrected. @InsidePolitics

So intensely proud of the work we do at @OperBenjamin correcting the historical record for America and the Jewish people.
Thanks @DanaBashCNN for joining us and @usabmc on this historic mission and helping tell the story of these amazing Jewish American soldiers who - for the first Memorial Day since they fell in battle - are now under Star of David headstones properly marking their faith.

“As we stand in this most incredibly moving, solemn and hallowed ground, we publicly acknowledge and affirm that their heroic contribution to the defense of America and the freedom of the world has not blurred with the passing of the years, has not receded these many decades later,” said Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter, president of @OperBenjamin.

Second Lt. Paul Sigmund Singer volunteered to fight the Nazis, leaving his studies at Columbia University to join the Canadian Air Force before the U.S. entered World War II. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942, serving as a navigator in the 44th Bomb Group.
Singer’s aircraft was attacked during a bombing raid on a German airfield in Italy in 1943, and his parachute did not deploy.
“Paul lived as a Jew, fought for America and the free world as a Jew, and died as a Jew... L’dor vador [from generation to generation], it’s now on us.”

🇺🇸 Today at the American Cemetery in Florence, we honored Frank Kurzinger, a Jewish-American hero by ensuring that his grave bears the Star of David. Frank’s bravery reminds us of the immense sacrifices made in the name of freedom. May future generations remember, reflect upon, and carry forward the torch of freedom and may our children become vigilant guardians of the values upon which the United States of America was founded.
