The Ficha Uchi campaign is taking the conversation about data protection beyond social media and into communities. This involves creating spaces where people can ask questions, share experiences and connect their rights to everyday situations.
Our baseline survey highlighted an important gap: many respondents could not identify any data subject rights under Kenya’s Data Protection Act.
Only 22% identified the right to consent, while the right to correction was among the least recognised.
These findings point to a bigger challenge: data protection cannot only be about having rights on paper. People need to know those rights, recognise when they are being violated, and understand what action they can take.
The survey also showed that social media is the primary source of digital safety information for respondents. This reinforces the role of digital platforms in reaching audiences.
If people are expected to understand, exercise and defend their data rights, we need to meet them where they are and communicate in ways that feel relevant to their everyday experiences.

How often do parents and young people fall for fake promotions, suspicious calls pretending to be from schools, or urgent messages asking for money?
This was one of the key issues that came up during our community engagement session in Kisauni, Mombasa.
Through an interactive play by @maono_space Creatives, community members identified how easily we can share our personal information without realising it and what can happen when that information gets into the wrong hands.

How do you protect yourself from being conned or unknowingly giving away your personal data?
Yesterday, at the Likoni Technical & Vocational College, the Ficha Uchi Campaign used interactive discussions, plays and creative performances by Maono Creatives to bring everyday data risks to life.
From fake competitions and prize offers to suspicious calls, links and requests for personal information, participants explored how data can be collected without informed consent and what they can do about it.
Through storytelling, participants identified potential data violations, asked questions and learned to think before sharing.
Think before you share. Ask questions. Know your rights. Your data belongs to you.
