Our manuscript reading groups continue this fall, with a few modifications from last year- as always these are wonderful opportunities for language learning, paleographic practice, and exploring new areas of Islamicate history and textuality! New participants are always welcome!

Don't know that I've seen something quite like this before: an Arabic text (Nathr al-laʾālī attributed to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) with not just a Persian interlinear translation (the first line below the Arabic) but also a Persian "amplification," bit like a sharḥ but not exactly:

We have a really cool line up of articles for reading and discussion in our Tuesday session next week: an examination of rebus-renderings of the Heart Sutra in early modern Japan and an exploration of the special properties of scripts and alphabets in the Ottoman world:

Next week's installment of our Critical History of Communicative Technologies course promises to be an especially good one- we're looking at histories of introductions and uptakes of writing in early Japan and the colonial period Andes, with implications for Islamicate societies:

New essay tackling a set of questions about subjectivity, textual technologies, and the history of emotions that have occupied my mind off and on for a long while now, still lots of questions outstanding but I kind of like it that way tbh. Link below:

How has print changed (or not!) our experience of texts, of communication, of our own inner states, and what happens when we bring in the (often previously left out) history of the Islamicate book to these questions? Link below to next week's reading guide:

Some striking doodles, reader notes, pen trials, and magical materia from the front pages of a 16th c. Syriac and Garshuni miscellany containing Psalms, memre, and other texts; the page on the left has several decidedly Islamic basmalahs in Arabic script (BnF Syriaque 13)

Coming back on for a moment to share this utterly charming sixth (!) century Coptic Orthodox wall hanging, might be Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego down there in the orans position; love the little birds with necklaces (?) (Cleveland Art Museum 1982.73)

This initial page from a late medieval Arabic majmū'a of Coptic Orthodox texts, BnF Arabe 72, has itself collected quite the array of texts over the centuries, including some early modern Latin script typography, Arabic script pen trials, seals, signatures, and a prominent A39

A fascinating example of how the division of the Qur’an into separate volumes can reflect patterns of ritual reading: in Somalia, the mushaf is often divided into seven manzil, each corresponding to a day of the week, beginning with Friday.

Fantastic doodles and Arabic writing practice from a medieval (likely) or perhaps early modern fragment originating in Fustat, fellow in the bottom right corner looks a bit like a Pharaoh, a bit like Napoleon (Dallas Museum of Art K.1.2014.1138)

Terrible news of the passing of my Leiden colleague and preeminent authority in Islamic and Arabic codicology and paleography, Professor Jan Witkam, who joined Leiden back in 1964, before going on to become the Professor of Paleography and Codicology of the Muslim World. RIP.
