Your PC might soon ask how old you are before you can use it. California, Colorado, and Illinois have passed laws requiring operating systems like Windows and macOS to collect users’ ages. California’s law starts in 2027. For now, simply declaring your age is enough, but companies could eventually use facial scans, government IDs or other verification methods to prevent minors from simply lying. The really important part is that these laws could have effects far beyond the states that passed them. Apple, Google and Microsoft may decide it’s easier to build one age-verification system for everyone rather than completely different systems for each state
