In your opinion; What is the purpose of an “Open Door Policy?”
I don’t think it’s intended an open invitation for all members of the FD to stroll over to the Chiefs office uninvited to talk about whatever is happening in the firehouse.
A Fire Chief’s “Open Door Policy” shouldn’t be where a junior firefighter goes to develop a personal relationship with the Chief.
It should be reserved for circumstances I which the line officers have a conflict or have failed to address a major issue. Harassment, hostile work… things like that.
The problems on your FD are not unique. Someone, somewhere has been there. It’s up to you to interact with other FFs to learn how they succeeded or failed when they dealt with a similar issue.
Seek Help & Experience. You’re not an expert.
Learn from others.
Your peers don’t care what books you’ve read or what letters are after your name. Just be a competent, dependable member of the team.
Firehouse etiquette dictates that if the NFL home team is playing, that’s what’s going to be on in the TV Room. Also true for MLB / NBA/ NHL playoffs.
Netflix, Hulu or trendy cult classic can wait. We get it: you’re eccentric & smarter than the rest of us…now beat it
If you wanna view videos of past fires to teach and learn, that’s great.
Dont forget to watch a few where an aggressive well trained engine company rapidly enters the house and successfully extinguishes the fire from within. These vids are plentiful but less popular to watch
Single family home, legacy construction.
If the basement is clear (no fire)…
***the first line goes in the front door. ***
Any other entry point should be the rare exception to the rule. Don’t overthink it.
“Theres a hole in the floor” can mean lots of things. Are you telling IC you cannot advance past it? Or just making sure all know to be careful? For the IC- Why is there a hole? Accelerant? Point of origin? Fire had a head start? A hole is not a red light- it’s a caution.
If you’ve been a fireman for 20+ years (in a decent size dept) and none of your coworkers are also your friend. it’s your fault.
It’s not because you’re special. It’s not because you’re “the only one who…”
It’s because you failed at nurturing and developing relationships.
Unpopular Opinion: If you don’t have kids or they’re over eighteen, you should probably be working on Christmas morning so someone else can have the morning off.

The body cam footage of the officer on scene when the mass shooter at the Allen Outlet Mall opened fire has been released.
The name of the police officer has not yet been revealed, but when it is known, we need to flood him with thanks. He did not wait for back up to arrive, he went right in and neutralized the threat. In a harrowing situation, he is a hero. #AllenShooter #AllenTx
