It launched in Japan in December 2002, and Sega brought it west in August 2003, only on Xbox. You play Raikoh Minamoto, an executioner who refused to kill his own father, died, and was brought back by a mysterious princess to purge the demons flooding Japan. The twist: Raikoh's undead body runs on magic, and it drains constantly. Stop killing and you start dying, so the game never lets you play it safe. Almost everything breaks. Swing a heavy weapon and temples, trees and walls shatter around you, which was rare back then. All that destruction still looks gorgeous today. GameSpot called it the best Xbox game of August 2003 and nominated it for Best Game No One Played. Years later, critics pointed to it as early Souls DNA. Fans are calling on Xbox to save Mass Effect, and honestly, it's not the wildest idea. EA closed BioWare on October 21 as part of a restructuring that cut around 400 jobs, and the early-stage next Mass Effect game was cancelled with it. EA still owns the IP, along with Dragon Age and Jade Empire. Former BioWare exec Mark Darrah says that with nobody working on those series now, EA might be more open to selling them. Forgotten Gems Kameo: Elements of Power (2005, Xbox 360 launch exclusive) Rare made it and Microsoft Game Studios published it, landing alongside the Xbox 360 launch on November 22, 2005. The road there was wild. Development spanned four consoles: it started on Nintendo 64, moved to GameCube, was about 80% done on the original Xbox, then jumped to Xbox 360. The hook: Kameo, an elf princess, morphs into 10 elemental warriors across fire, ice, plant, rock and water, swapping forms on the fly to smash trolls and crack puzzles. It was a true launch showpiece. Thousands of characters on screen at once, a bold color palette, and Rare's first orchestral score, recorded with an orchestra and choir in Prague. Rare later added free online co-op, and a darker Kameo 2 was in the works before it got canceled. Forgotten Gems Too Human (2008, Xbox 360 exclusive) Silicon Knights made it and Microsoft published it, landing on August 19, 2008 after one of the longest development roads of its era. The pitch is wild: Norse mythology rebuilt as sci-fi. The gods of Asgard are cybernetically enhanced warriors protecting the last humans in Midgard from an army of machines. You play Baldur, the god who is the least cybernetic of them all, which makes him "too human". The hook was combat on the right stick. You flick it toward enemies to slash, juggle them in the air, and chain combos, while guns lock on automatically. Underneath sits a loot game before loot games took over. Five classes, Cybernetic or Human alignments, skill trees, runes, and two-player drop-in co-op over Xbox Live. Its demo topped 900,000 downloads, and it was meant to kick off a trilogy that never came. Best part: Microsoft re-released it in June 2019 as a free download, backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It is still free on the Xbox Store today. Private equity firms reportedly sized up a buyout of Xbox, and the price tag says a lot about what this brand is worth. According to The Information, a group of private equity firms valued the Xbox business at $100 billion to $150 billion in exploratory talks. The discussions were short-lived and never turned into a formal negotiation with Microsoft. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has already said Xbox is not for sale, and she told Fortune this week that Xbox will be an important part of Microsoft for a very long time.
