Obligatory Verlander story. Don't know him personally, loved how he pitched. June 2005, High A. It's about 110 degrees with humidity and barely anyone shows up at games. I'm 20 something years old, been in the minors a couple years, have my legs under me like all my teammates. Verlander had held out for more money after the draft. He signed for like $4 or $5m, most peopel in minors making like $2k a month. Was talk of every clubhouse all spring. This guy thinks he's hot sht wanting more money. Yadda Yadda. June 11, doubleheader vs Lakeland. First time we get to see him. Whole team is juiced. We're gonna show that guy. We'll light him up. He ain't sht. Dude steps out and absolutely shoves it right the fck down our throats. Painting 95-98 with a filthy curveball. Prob struck out 10 plus. By end of the game hitters were just dejected hanging their heads. After the game, whole team: ya, that guy's pretty good. He was in Detroit a couple weeks later, was literally playing a different game.
