SIR is NOT new. And it is certainly NOT a BJP invention. 🗳️ A quick reality check for those spreading misinformation. 📌 1. SIR has a history. The Election Commission has conducted intensive electoral roll revisions multiple times since Independence, including in 1952–56, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1983–84, 1987–89, 1992–95 and 2002–04. This process predates the BJP governments at the Centre. 📌 2. Why is SIR necessary? A fair election begins with an accurate voter list. SIR aims to identify dead, shifted, absent and duplicate entries, correct errors, and ensure eligible citizens are included. Its legal basis includes Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. 📌 3. How does the process work? 1️⃣ Booth Level Officers (BLOs) distribute and collect enumeration forms. 2️⃣ Voter details are verified against existing records, with further documentation sought where required. 3️⃣ A draft electoral roll is published. 4️⃣ Voters can submit claims and objections. Officials examine them and conduct hearings where required. 5️⃣ After the prescribed process, the final electoral roll is published. 📌 4. What about safeguards? ✔️ Voters are given a designated period to participate. ✔️ BLOs make household visits to facilitate enumeration. ✔️ Claims and objections can be submitted through the prescribed forms. ✔️ Eligible citizens left out of the roll can apply for inclusion through Form 6. 📊 5. What do the reported numbers say? According to the ECI briefing cited in this account: • 82 crore out of 95 crore voters submitted enumeration forms. • Around 13 crore entries were categorised as absent, shifted, dead or duplicate. • These included 2.89 crore deceased voters and 1.01 crore duplicate entries. • Around 29 lakh names were deleted through Form 7. • More than 2 crore people registered through Form 6. 📌 6. What about judicial scrutiny? The Supreme Court’s observations and orders must be read in their exact context. The ECI’s authority, the applicable legal safeguards and the rights of individual voters are all important parts of this debate. Opposing every attempt to clean up electoral rolls without addressing the problem of duplicate, deceased or otherwise ineligible entries is not a solution. Democracy needs both: clean electoral rolls and protection for every eligible voter’s right to vote. 🗳️ Check your name on the electoral roll.
