On November 21, 1990, Nintendo released both Super Mario World and the Super Famicom in Japan! The US wouldn’t see SNES and Mario World until Aug. 23, 1991, and I remember being so excited by commercials saying Mario would “need the help of a dinosaur” and hearing the iconic “Now You’re Playing with Power” now followed by “Super Power.” Miyamoto wanted a rideable dinosaur for Mario in earlier titles, but the NES was not yet capable. The SNES could, though! As a kid I loved dinosaurs, and getting to ride on adorable Yoshi who got unique powers from shells was so charming! Mario World itself is considered one of the best Mario titles, and games generally, for good reason. It has fantastic platforming, fun secret worlds such as Star World, vibrant environments, and a magnificent soundtrack by Kondo. SNES (and Super Famicom) and Mario World ushered in an exciting new era for gaming, and to this day I smile anytime I hear the opening music and see the colorful Mario lettering. ❤️
