Distraction-style thefts are escalating to robberies. In recent reports, suspects are driving around in residential areas looking for South Asian senior women. They use tactics such as asking for directions, claiming it’s their birthday, or telling the woman she looks like their mother to get her to approach the vehicle. Then, they grab at her, pull her arm into the vehicle, and forcibly remove jewellery.
Police are advising Edmontonians to avoid approaching unknown vehicles. If you are a victim or a witness in this type of robbery, take down the license plate if it’s safe to do so, and call 911 immediately.
