In electronic continuous double-auction markets (e.g., E-mini S&P 500 futures), residual cross-sectional heterogeneity of private valuations and trading horizons may be inferred from the joint behavior of the visible limit-order book and the interaction of marketable order flow with that book. Three interrelated microstructural observables permit classification of the prevailing informational and strategic regime.
1. Resilience and replenishment dynamics of opposing passive liquidity within the limit-order book.
When residual displayed and latent depth on the opposing side of the book continues to absorb aggressive marketable orders at or near previously established structural reference prices—manifested as sustained queue replenishment, iceberg refreshes, or stable top-of-book size without material adverse selection or progressive cancellation—the market continues to exhibit meaningful heterogeneity of conditional valuations. Under these conditions, the conditional distribution of subsequent returns retains a non-negligible mean-reverting component, as residual counterparties remain willing to supply liquidity against the prevailing imbalance. Conversely, progressive withdrawal of opposing depth (cancellation of resting orders, failure of iceberg replenishment, or systematic consumption of visible and inferred latent liquidity), particularly when accompanied by rising cancellation rates relative to replenishment, constitutes evidence of progressive homogenization of decision rules. The resulting contraction in residual counterparty diversity elevates the conditional probability of directional continuation and local volatility expansion, consistent with models in which correlated forecasting errors amplify rather than cancel.
2. Resolution of order-flow imbalance through absorption versus sequential reinforcement.
Sustained absorption of aggressive order flow—observable as elevated transaction volume and footprint imbalances at a given price level with limited contemporaneous displacement of the mid-price or last-traded price—implies that residual participants continue to hold sufficiently divergent conditional valuations to defend and replenish passive liquidity. This state is consistent with the maintenance of predictive diversity. By contrast, repeated fulfillment of aggressive marketable orders that produce sequential, non-reverting increments in price (positive feedback between delta and price path), especially when accompanied by thinning of the opposing side of the book and declining replenishment rates, signals progressive alignment of remaining decision processes. Once this alignment threshold is crossed, incremental aggressive flow is more likely to be accommodated by continuation than by reversion, as the book’s capacity for error cancellation and passive supply has diminished.
3. Identification of late-stage liquidity extraction against discrete concentrations of resting interest.
Following an extended directional displacement under predominantly one-sided aggressive flow and progressive depletion of opposing book depth, the subsequent targeting of discrete, high-visibility concentrations of resting stop and limit orders (prior session extremes, round-number levels, or previously defended structural prices) constitutes a liquidity-extraction event. At this stage, both displayed and latent opposing passive liquidity have typically been materially depleted, and cancellation rates on the residual opposing side often accelerate. Consequently, the marginal risk-adjusted return to further consensus continuation declines, and subsequent price resolution is more frequently determined by the character and magnitude of post-extraction absorption (or its absence) within the reconfigured book than by the extraction event itself.

Market Profile can help traders identify when a market is rejecting an area of value and where price could move next.
In this session breakdown, Mike examines sustained negative delta near the distribution highs, resting liquidity at lower prices and the market’s response after rejecting value. These signals help build a picture of selling pressure and potential areas of interest.

Algos instantly hit into the offer with 1.9K lots on ES at the end of the LOD flush earlier.
In this video I go over the strong aggressive flows off LOD as well as the flows that we saw on the rebid.
These ultra-aggressive (and defensive) flows at LOD eventually led to a strong short squeeze. This order flow sequence is a good example to use for understanding some of the mechanics and nuances of order flow.

Ladder shows pattern, sometimes can be similar to vp although more ephemeral in time and volume. But you can and should get to know participants by name (time, lot size, etc) as most of them are unsophisticated enough to advertise clearly their positions. And I mean positions, bids\ask largely irrelevant spoof.
these players you know by name can either lead the market or get trapped etc. focus on the meat not the sauce.
and that’s when you decide your position. Average rotation is your friend here too

When a market is fundamentally repricing, the pullback can provide an opportunity to engage at a better average price.
Mike looks at resting liquidity, volume and the development of new areas of value to identify where the market is likely to retrade. As the move develops, those areas shift, giving traders new reference points for placing limits and managing execution.

Example of How to Read and Trade the Auction
Last night: start with a blank chart. 15m bars, showing 3-4 weeks. Use SPX or cash-only back-adjusted ES (SPY not recommended due to Friday's ex-div gap). Mentally draw boxes/ranges. If you do that, you will notice that March 9, 13, and 18 had similar lows, and the gap down on the 19th (last Thurs) was a clear break away from those prices.
Next, follow the auction since then (see pic). The pop at the EOD Thursday was sold and the Friday explored lower. Monday's gap up was sold back into Thursday's range, and Tuesday's gap down was bought back into Thursday's range.
At this point, a pattern begins to emerge. A profile really helps to visualize but you don't necessarily need it. We started multiple excursions from ~6638 ES (~6585 SPX) and returned to it every time. It has been a magnet.
Integrating Narrative
This morning - with a well established 4-day balance, my thesis is that we are gapping up here for a reason: the market wants to be higher. On Monday I proposed this. It's looking ahead to the resolution of the war. Part of this is just experience, I've seen it a lot. Not just in "what usually happens" but that it's just not going down as easily; again, it takes some experience to recognize this.
So that's my mindset going in. Willing to short but I'd rather be a buyer. The magnet effect of 24-38 kept me from wanting to buy on the gap up this morning. However, the sell on "nuclear power plant attacked" right into that area was met with very strong buying. Find a way to get into that long, and it's a good opportunity.
Review
Overlooked from many reviews is the most important thing: I was not so eager to buy that I bought a news-induced falling knife. I did not buy 6650, then 40, then puke out at 35 and watch it go higher without me. I waited for buyers. I bought 11 handles off the low, after the low, averaging into 6643. You don't have to catch the turn exactly. There was an unmistakable buying impulse there, at the price I expected buyers, and that's all you need.
I got flat at 6658 and while not ideal, was in line with my thesis that simply rotating above the 6624-38 area was the market's goal today. The structure was not ideal for immediate continuation higher. I'll post the "why" some other time.
Anyway, that's all. This was a very simple analysis, and just involves walking through the structure and arriving at some context in which to execute. Every day is not like this. Some days the picture is muddy and I have no good bigger picture zones/levels to execute at, and I focus exclusively on very short term references made during the session. Some of my best days are those. Monday was far better and I had no such plan. But when the structure speaks to you at an intuitive level, utilize that and some good opportunities will often emerge.
