Welcome to the American Diabetes Society.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preventing & reversing type 2 diabetes through root-cause, evidence-based metabolic health education & advocacy.
We focus on insulin resistance, not just glucose numbers.
Meet Sarah.
She's 52. Her A1C is 5.4%. She's told everything looks normal.
But she's exhausted after meals, constantly hungry, and gaining weight despite eating less.
Does she have insulin resistance? Not necessarily.
The goal shouldn't be to order every possible lab or treat every symptom as a sign of metabolic dysfunction, but to look at the whole picture of your health, labs and symptoms alike.
Your lab results matter. Your symptoms matter, too.
Good healthcare means understanding both.
One change you can make this week: stop drinking your calories.
Soda, sweetened coffee drinks, and other sugary beverages can add tons of sugar with little to no satiety.
Try water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea instead.
Start with one swap. Build from there.
Diagnosed with prediabetes? Ask your doctor these 5 questions:
What do my labs actually tell us?
Could insulin resistance be contributing?
What are my treatment options?
What should I focus on first?
How will we measure progress?
Prediabetes is a reason to act not to panic.
Therapeutic carbohydrate reduction (TCR) now has a peer-reviewed implementation guideline.

Developed to help address the growing epidemic of metabolic dysfunction.
What is metabolic health?
It's more than your weight or blood sugar.
It's a report card of multiple biomakers that tell how well your body regulates and uses energy, including how it handles glucose, insulin, and fat.
One number can't tell the whole story.
Thinking about food is normal, but persistent hunger is worth investigating.
Consider:
• Are you eating enough?
• Are meals sufficiently filling?
• Getting enough protein?
• Sleeping well?
• Under significant stress?
Hunger is information not a lack of willpower.
Traveling? Don't overcomplicate it. Start with protein.
Think eggs, meat, fish, greek yogurt, cheese, nuts.
Then add fruit, vegetables, or other minimally processed foods.
Stay hydrated. Don't arrive at meals starving.
And don't let perfection be the enemy of good.
Normal blood sugar is important, but it's not the same as optimal metabolic health.
Your body can compensate for insulin resistance by producing more insulin while keeping blood glucose in the normal range.
That's why one number can't tell the whole story.
We're often asked: Can you reverse insulin resistance?
The short answer: Yes.
You don't have to wait until your blood sugar is high to start caring about metabolic health.
One change you can make this week:
Build your meal around protein.
Protein supports satiety, muscle, and metabolic health.
Start with a protein-rich food, then build the rest of your meal around it.
You don't need to change everything at once.
Start with one meal.
Overwhelmed by metabolic health? Start here:
Know your numbers & what they actually measure.
Look for patterns.
Build the basics: food, movement, muscle, sleep.
Change 1-2 things at a time.
Know when to investigate further.
You don't need to know everything, just how to start.
A1C estimates your average blood glucose over the past 2–3 months.
Useful? Absolutely.
The whole picture? No.
A1C doesn't show glucose highs/lows or how much insulin your body needs to maintain that glucose.
Your A1C is a piece of the puzzle, not the entire picture.
Diabetes care shouldn't be limited to managing blood sugar after it becomes a problem.
Understanding insulin resistance gives us an opportunity to address metabolic dysfunction earlier.
American Diabetes Society retweeted
You do not fail weight loss because you lack willpower. You fail because you stay hungry and keep insulin high.
An all meat carnivore diet flips that. You eat until you are full. No calorie counting. No tiny portions. Just fatty meat and protein that keep you satisfied for hours so your body can finally burn stored fat.
If every other plan has failed, watch this before you start another one.

Type 2 diabetes doesn't suddenly appear.
Insulin resistance can develop for years before blood glucose crosses the threshold for prediabetes or diabetes.
Don't wait for the diagnosis to start paying attention to metabolic health.
