What does responsible AI adoption look like when you manage software for a fund manager?
We spoke to Sameer Adams, Head of Software & AI Engineering at Coronation Fund Managers, about how 13 years at the company have shaped his approach.

Engineers have always been climbing the stack. Machine code gave way to application languages, and every new layer meant trusting more of what sits under the hood.
Raphael Smith believes AI is the next layer, and itโs arriving faster than any before it. The skill worth building now is knowing which tasks you can trust AI with, then revisiting that call every time a new model lands.
He unpacked this, along with how to keep your judgement sharp without living in the weeds, in our Next-Gen Engineer online event.

โBeing able to show how I use AI in my workflow helped me justify a salary increase.โ Thatโs what one developer shared in our 2026 survey.
Pay is still the top reason developers stick around, and the most common bump this year was 4% to 6%. Close behind is meaningful work, which developers describe as challenging work that keeps them learning. AI is reshaping that too, already giving half of developers more time to focus on higher-value tasks.

Engineers love to engineer. Hand one an AI that writes code, and theyโll start building a system to manage it before lunch.
Stephan Swart, Fractional CTO, says thatโs exactly the shift. Youโre still building. Youโre just building the thing that builds the thing: code, acceptance tests, automated tests, the lot.
Thatโs how AI capability develops in a team. You start out assisted and checking everything. You delegate more as the system proves itself. Eventually, some work runs on its own.

At DevConf 2026, we asked the community one question: whatโs your AI engineering archetype?
Are you the:
๐ Agent-orchestrating Builder?
๐ฃ System-mapping Explorer?
๐ด Output-amplifying Multiplier?
๐ก Precision-first Artisan?
๐ต Skill-forging Apprentice?
Take our quick quiz - it only takes five minutes to discover your AI engineering archetype ๐ ow.ly/WQuj50ZW9nI

In every conversation we've had with engineering leaders this year, AI delivery comes up.
Most SA teams are somewhere between experimenting and embedding it. Nobody in SA has solid data on how many initiatives actually make it from pilot to production.
The State of AI Delivery ZA 26 is where that picture starts. ๐

We caught up with Andrew Baker, Group CIO at Capitec, about what adopting AI really looks like inside a bank. Here are a few takeaways.
๐๏ธ AI adoption starts with the architecture. Andrew believes the key question is not what AI can do, but what happens when it gets something wrong.
๐ง Boundaries make experimentation possible. At Capitec, having the right guardrails lets teams try new things without risking production systems.
๐ง AI amplifies strengths and gaps. One developer used AI to rewrite Capitecโs internet banking platform in roughly three months. But getting it production-ready still took a team with complementary skills, because AI amplified their gaps as much as their strengths.
๐ฅ Two responsibilities for engineering leaders. Create an environment where people can experiment and learn safely, and bring different perspectives into the work early enough to catch what one person might miss.

Nick van Noordwyk recently interviewed engineering candidates who all claimed to be AI-fluent. After a few follow-up questions, most were just getting started with delegating to agents.
For Nick, the gap between using AI and getting good work out of agents comes down to setup. His team went from pairing with AI to running agents in the background by restructuring their repos and building the environment agents need to produce work worth shipping.
This Thursday, Nick will show what theyโve set up and walk through how they ship a feature with agents, end to end.

On Thamsanqa Moyo's team, agents run multi-day coding cycles largely on their own, shipping code overnight and over weekends. Engineers spend less time reviewing every line and more time planning and directing the work.
Getting there meant rethinking who they hire and how teams are structured. His engineers moved from solo builders juggling several projects each, to small pods of two or three who plan and direct while the agents build.
Speed doesn't come at the cost of safety, if you build it right.
Thams is joining The Next-Gen Engineer: How AI-Assisted Teams Actually Build with AI. He'll break down what it actually takes to get a team operating like this, and how you could get yours there too.

We sat down with Brian van Vuuren, Software Development Manager at Allan Gray, to talk about AI's impact on software development and tech leadership. Three things stood out:

How much control do you actually have over what you pay your team? ๐ฐ
For most SA tech managers, not much. Only 1 in 12 have full control over pay decisions. The rest are working around leadership overrides, budget constraints, and salary bands that don't exist yet.

47% of developers say challenging, meaningful work that keeps them learning is a key reason they stay. This is even more true for teams working with AI. ๐ค
For some developers, AI opens the door to more strategic, high-impact work. For others, it can feel like the parts of coding they actually enjoy are slowly disappearing.
If youโre leading a team, donโt fight the change. Help your developers lean into it. Make space for learning, growth, and new kinds of challenges.
At the end of the day, keeping your best people might come down to helping them see whatโs next for them on your team.

Meet Daniel Amber, CTO at Cars.coza ๐
Daniel didnโt take the usual route into leadership. He started out editing videos, jumped into a coding bootcamp, shipped code as a Senior Clojure Developer, then moved up through Tech Lead and Head of Technology before landing as CTO. He even picked up an MBA along the way.
Hereโs why youโll want to catch him at our next Leadership Lessons AMA:
๐งฉ Find out why most delivery headaches are actually decision problems hiding in plain sight
๐งฉ Pick up a practical way to figure out where decisions really live on your team
๐งฉ Hear some honest stories from his own leap from engineer to leader
๐งฉ See what shifts in org design when AI takes away โexecutionโ as an excuse
Ever wonder why your team still feels slow even when youโre ticking all the boxes? Bring your questions and hear from someone whoโs figuring it out in real time.
