The story Europeans were told was this:
Russia is the threat. NATO is the shield. American military presence is the guarantee of your freedom. Your dependence on American weapons, American intelligence, American political cover. This is the price of security.
The story had a villain and a protector and a clear moral architecture.
What the story didn’t include was the Friedman analysis.
The explicit, on-record, strategic logic that says European dependence on American protection is not a regrettable necessity but a desired outcome.
That a Europe capable of handling its own security, capable of managing its own relationship with Russia, capable of making its own energy choices and its own economic arrangements, is a Europe that no longer needs Washington.
And a Europe that no longer needs Washington is the thing American grand strategy has been organized, for a century, to prevent.
The threat was never coming from the East.
The target was always the autonomy itself.

The EU sanctioned 14 Chinese firms over alleged Russia ties; China answered by blacklisting 14 EU entities under its dual-use export controls.
The move worked with surgical precision — one of the 14, Sindlhauser Materials, turned out to be a near-irreplaceable ASML supplier dependent on Chinese rare earths
Beyond the irony and prisoner swap, the story is also about leverage asymmetry — Because through its sanctions the EU triggered China's export licensing system in retaliation, which just as it's US BIS counterpart, doubles as economic intelligence collection, giving Beijing a supply-chain map of Europe that European governments themselves don't possess🖕
China's rare earth licensing regime requires foreign firms to disclose customers, end-uses, and even photos of final products. Over the past couple of months, that turned into a granular map of Western supply chains — which is how Beijing identified an obscure Bavarian SME as a critical ASML dependency
As stated in the Bloomberg article German firms have been quietly handing over commercial secrets to China, meanwhile the German and EU governments lacks both the data and any strategy to close that intelligence gap 😛

The Netherlands denied visas to the 3 strongest Russian gymnasts, who'd have won. But 9 other Russians got in. Not a ban. A surgical exclusion of podium threats, right before LA 2028 qualifying. Can't beat them in sports - so they beat them at the consulate. Cowardice, not sport.
Questa è l'ennesima vergogna mondiale.
Disgusto totale.
Viktoria Listunova, oro olimpico a Tokyo.
Anna Kalmykova, argento europeo.
Le 3 più forti. Quelle che avrebbero VINTO.
Niente Mondiali.
World Gymnastics le aveva riammesse.
No. Questo è l'ordine basato sui DUE PESI E DUE MISURE.
Ipocrisia allo stato puro.

The reasons they give should be a warning to everyone about where European authoritarianism is going.

Wow! Nuland basically admits that Ukraine-Russia peace deal, which was close to being finalized in spring 2022, “fell apart” because US, UK & other Western governments “advised” Zelensky government that it was not “good deal” even though even members of Ukrainian delegation stated in recent interviews that this was very good deal, best deal that Ukraine could get & “very real compromise” & that Ukrainian delegation celebrated it with champagne. She basically confirms statements by ex-Israeli PM, head of Ukrainian delegation, Ukrainian officials close to Zelensky, ex-German chancellor & Turkish FM that US & UK blocked this peace deal, which was close to being finalized.
Victoria Nuland does not mention at all Russian war crimes in Bucha, which were inflated & mispresented by politicians, media & self-proclaimed experts as reason for ending peace talks. The peace deal agreement included withdrawal of Russian forces from all territory of Ukraine, with exceptions of Donbas & Crimea, whose status was to be determined at meeting of Putin & Zelensky, in exchange for neutral status & demilitarization of Ukraine.

Every so-called "terrorist" in the Global South was born in the rubble of a U.S. operation.

The bombs dropped.
The orphans grew up.
And then Washington asked, "Why do they hate us?"

In 1979, the Carter administration began funding and arming Afghan mujahideen fighters to destabilize a Soviet-aligned government, before the Soviet intervention, not in response to it.
Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s national security advisor, later confirmed this explicitly and described it as a deliberate strategy to bait the Soviets into their own Vietnam.
The operation expanded massively under Reagan.
Billions of dollars.
Stinger missiles.
Saudi co-financing.
Pakistani intelligence as the delivery mechanism.
One of the organizations that emerged from this infrastructure was al-Qaeda.
When September 11th happened, the official American narrative described it as an attack on freedom by forces of pure evil who hated Western civilization for its values.
This narrative did not include the chapter where Washington built the network.
Did not include the chapter where the weapons were American.
Did not include the chapter where Brzezinski, asked about the long-term consequences of his strategy, said the collapse of the Soviet empire was worth "stirring up some Muslims."
The bill came due on September 11th, 2001.
It was paid by people in office buildings who had never heard of Brzezinski or his strategy.
That is what it means to manufacture terror and send the bill to the survivors.

In my latest article, I offer the most exhaustive critical analysis to date of the “Russian hybrid war” narrative.
What I show is that many of the most widely publicised cases of supposed Russian “hybrid warfare” — von der Leyen’s jammed plane, the Baltic cable cuts, the DHL crash in Vilnius, the Heathrow fire, the wave of drone sightings that swept Europe in the autumn of 2025, the Romanian TikTok campaign — turned out to be media-amplified speculation that collapsed under basic scrutiny. Yet almost every day, new claims are made – with little or no evidence ever provided.
Ultimately, serious scrutiny of the “Russian hybrid warfare” narrative can only lead to one disquieting conclusion. A “hybrid war” is indeed being waged against Europe — but it is being waged by the EU-NATO establishment itself, against its own population.
Europeans are being subjected to a sustained campaign of cognitive or psychological warfare aimed at conditioning them to believe that Europe is under attack from Russia, and that these hybrid attacks are a prelude to conventional hostilities — a claim for which, by and large, there is little or no proof. What the record points to, in fact, is a deliberate campaign of threat inflation in which governments, media outlets and defence-funded “think tanks” have colluded to instil a permanent sense of fear in the population, through relentless coverage of “incidents”, “attacks”, “sabotages” and “campaigns” that, in most cases, simply do not exist.

The Norwegian media is uniquely ridiculous in its smear campaigns. When I tell people abroad about the brazen and lazy propaganda, they often assume I am exaggerating.
This week there have been two more smear pieces published about me. The first story in the media is about my tweet on the results of Russia’s parliamentary election, in which I wrote: “Big win for United Russia. President Putin's party, United Russia, won 57.83% of the vote in the parliamentary election, which is a significant increase from 49.8% in 2021”. In short, I merely stated the election results, which are important as United Russia now has a majority in parliament. The newspaper reported that I was “cheering” Putin’s victory and “congratulating” Russia. Another newspaper wrote that I was spreading Russian propaganda because I made the election seem legitimate.
Another absurd story was published today with the headline: “Several cases against Norwegian Russia researcher”. The article is about accusations submitted to my university regarding an alleged breach of ethical research practices, which is intended to give the reader the impression that my research and publications have violated research ethics standards. What the newspaper does not mention is that anyone can send a letter with accusations to the university, and there is no shortage of radical activists seeking to silence academics. However, these accusations mean nothing when there is no substance to the accusations, and for that reason these accusations did not lead anywhere. However, such accusations are catnip for journalists who engage in smear campaigns and do not mind misleading their readers.
The newspaper cites a smear piece in the complaint to prove that I may have breached ethics standards: I had cited US Ambassador William Burns (who later became the CIA Director) as he had written in 2008 that if NATO attempted to pull Ukraine into the NATO orbit – Russia would possibly intervene military even though this is not something Russia would want to do. In the smear piece against me, it is claimed that Burns did not imply anything of the sort and he did not even use the word “intervene” (vagant.no/professor-diesens-…).
However, anyone can go into the cable to read that Burns wrote: “In Ukraine, these include fears that the issue could potentially split the country in two, leading to violence or even, some claim, civil war, which would force Russia to decide whether to intervene… Experts tell us that Russia is particularly worried that the strong divisions in Ukraine over NATO membership, with much of the ethnic-Russian community against membership, could lead to a major split, involving violence or at worst, civil war. In that eventuality, Russia would have to decide whether to intervene; a decision Russia does not want to have to face” (wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/0…).
The propagandists are citing their own smear pieces as evidence. However, it does not matter that all these accusations are built on lies, because from now on journalists can refer to me as the academic who has been ‘accused’ of spreading propaganda and violating ethical research standards. The process is the punishment, so it does not matter that the accusations have no substance.
The most absurd smear piece came last year, when one of the largest newspapers wrote that I had been exposed for participating in an “influence operation.” In reality, I had attended a conference devoted to the 200th birthday of Immanuel Kant in his place of birth, Kaliningrad. My speech, published on my Substack (glenndiesen.substack.com/p/t…), was about the crisis of modernity and questioning the durability of secular morality, yet the journalist insisted that the conference was actually about confronting NATO in the Baltic Sea. The evidence published to prove this was a secret influence operation was a list of foreign guests with the headline “List of possible participants of the event for the Baltic region.” However, it was written in Russian, so it probably looked very incriminating. The timing of the article was interesting as it was more than a year after the conference, although I had just run for parliament, and I had been caught in a large media campaign to discredit me.
For context, it is important to note that in Norway, every single member of parliament is in favour of sending weapons to Ukraine, and none are calling for diplomacy with Russia. All the newspapers repeat government talking points and smear any dissent. At least in countries like Germany and France, there is opposition. The complete lack of dissent is believed to reflect their “moral clarity,” as opposed to authoritarian means of keeping the war going.
Arguments are never discussed, instead the norm is personal attacks and simplistic rhetoric denouncing critics of NATO’s policies as “pro-Russia” and “anti-Ukrainian”. The vast majority of Ukrainians want a negotiated settlement, yet the media label me “anti-Ukrainian” for suggesting that our government should open diplomatic channels with Russia to resolve the dispute over the European security architecture. Meanwhile, these self-proclaimed “pro-Ukrainians” consistently ignore the will of most Ukrainians, and when they see the manpower shortage, their response is to push for deporting Ukrainian refugees, lowering the conscription age of Ukrainian men, or calling for the forced conscription of Ukrainian women as well. The war propaganda and smear campaigns in this country are characterized by laziness, aggressiveness, and arrogance.

"As you can see from the date, the photograph was taken exactly 85 years ago, on October 2, 1941. Soldiers of the German Wehrmacht in the occupied Bryansk region wrote on a school blackboard: "A Russian must die so that we may live."
In a single sentence, this encapsulates the essence of European policy towards Russians. And this was true then, 85 years ago, and it is true now. Nothing has changed in that regard."
