“I have heard of those big cities in the American continent, and I was never too interested in visiting them. Don’t get me wrong, there’s corruption in the big cities of my country as well… A proper statement would be that crooks know where to conduct business and

He offers a sad smile:
“My condolences for the loss of your husband; it must have been difficult to start a new life without him in a new town. And I agree with you, some things are best left untold.”

“I must confess that I forgot what it’s like not being to travel as fast as with the train. But I’m sure you’ll soon enjoy it. Are you a native from Independence, or did you settle there? Of course, if my questions make you feel uncomfortable, please feel free to let me know.”

“You don’t have a railway?” Ambrose repeats, shocked. “Pardon me, Miss, but it seems to me that your beloved town has been overlooked, and while I sympathise for your love for her and its people, it doesn’t seem quite fair that you may be cut out from the rest of the country!”

Sebastian couldn’t possibly know that the woman had showed up unannounced and that Ambrose didn’t know who she was.
He cleared his voice, then tried to sound casual:
“Actually, she’s already settled in the Flower room, the one we keep ready in case of an impromptu visit.”

“Actually…” Ambrose hesitated and he finally stopped pacing, taking hold of the back of an armchair for support. “I don’t know how long she’s going to stay. Better let the staff know that our guest might stay for a few days… Maybe have a maid attend to her needs as well?”
“Yes, yes, whatever,” Ambrose dismissed Sebastian’s excuse with a gesture of his hand that betrayed his annoyance. He wouldn’t admit it openly of course, but his butler had showed some good initiative.
“We have a guest in the house,” he announced flatly.
Ambrose was pacing restlessly in the living room despite his bad leg. How would he explain the presence of a perfect stranger in his house?
Of course, as soon as he saw Sebastian, he barked at him:
“Where have you been? Why is it that you’re never around when I need you most?”

Since his lordship was busy, he took a bit of time to take care of his master’s horse.
And maybe look at the new guy working at the stables…
He was quite easy to look at. But of course he wouldn’t say it out loud.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Walker. My name is Ambrose Clifford Blakesleye. Is Independence a big town?"

If she thinks it will add a touch of colour to her dress, he wouldn't dare and contradict her.
He doesn't even know for which occasion she's wearing the dress.

Ambrose would look at the dress and admit it’s pretty nice, yet a little bland. She would need some nice jewellery to stand out from the rest of the crowd if she were attending a ball.

“I haven’t visited the American continent yet, but I’m intrigued. Would you mind telling me more about Independence, Miss?”
