Really enjoyed my chat with @wode_maya about what the IMF does, how we support countries like Ghana, and why that support matters for people’s lives and livelihoods. We also discussed the opportunities ahead for Africa and lessons from my time as Jamaica’s Finance Minister.

Patriotism should not be about military training. Leaders must show patriotism by example; don’t be corrupt, respect the constitution, treat citizens right, etc. Leaders must be patriotic, even as they demand the citizens to be patriotic. During the campaigns, young people were brutalised for simply holding the national flag, yet Government is now saying it wants to teach them patriotism! #KeepingTheGovtInCheck

Part of the reason debt repayment is so high as a % for low-income countries is because multilaterals repeatedly forced them to borrow at high interest rates while cutting investment in things that would grow their economies, like education, healthcare and local industry. The film “Life and Debt” offers a great breakdown of how that was done to Jamaica.
Money spent on interest is money that can't go to public investment, social spending, or support during downturns. In low-income countries, interest payments today consume over 15% of tax revenues. Read more in the latest Fiscal Monitor blog: imf.org/en/blogs/articles/20…

Tesla has unveiled an electric sports car that can drive upside down and use rocket-like thrusters to jump and turn mid-air. Developed with Elon Musk's SpaceX, it can reportedly accelerate to 97km/h in under a second. First promised in 2017, the car is now expected in 2028.

El-Sayed: Trump’s neat trick is to become the subject of every conversation and to force people to take sides. And here’s the thing about it: once you take sides, he’s forcing you to double down on crazier and crazier stuff. And soon enough, you’re out here signing on to a bunch of things that, like three years ago, you’re like, “That’s insane.” But here’s the problem: you don’t want to have to face down that one friend who’s going to tell you, “I told you so.” And so what happens is that you keep doubling down on the craziest stuff. And you find yourself so far gone up that tree that there’s no way you can climb down. We’ve got to help those folks. Because guess what? They’re paying for $5 gas too. They’re paying insane diesel prices too. They can’t see a doctor either

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers reportedly had a text thread competing to pull over the most Black drivers, while using racial slurs in discussions about force against Black residents. More than half a dozen officers have reportedly been recommended for termination or quit. A badge should NEVER be a license for discrimination! These allegations call into question traffic stops and use-of-force incidents involving these officers!

🌍🇪🇺 Addressing members of the European Parliament’s Delegation to the OACPS-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (DACP) in Strasbourg🇫🇷 (@Europarl_EN), H.E. Mr Moussa Saleh Batraki (@MBatraki), Secretary-General of the OACPS, called for renewed OACPS-EU cooperation capable of translating more than five decades of partnership into joint action in an increasingly complex global environment. The Secretary-General highlighted the priorities and reforms emerging from the 11th OACPS Summit in Malabo, while stressing the need to reduce shared vulnerabilities, advance economic transformation, strengthen local value chains and respond more effectively to climate and development challenges. Looking ahead to the parliamentary meetings in November, he called for accelerated ratification of the Samoa Agreement and a stronger role for parliamentarians in ensuring that recommendations are followed through, commitments are measurable and the partnership delivers tangible results for citizens. 🌍🇪🇺 🌐 oacps.org #OACPS #EuropeanParliament #OACPSEU #ParliamentaryCooperation #SamoaAgreement

A Berkeley chemical engineer who suffered years of unexplained illness discovered through a spy camera from Amazon that her coworker, David Xu, was poisoning her food and water with cadmium, a toxic heavy metal for nearly 18 months between 2017 and 2019. The victim experienced significant health problems and at times required emergency care at a hospital. Newly released video shows Xu appearing to put a substance in her water bottle in 2019. Xu was arrested that year and charged with attempted murder and two counts of poisoning, offenses that could have sent him to prison for life. But under a plea deal, the attempted murder charge and one poisoning count were dropped. Xu pleaded no contest to one felony poisoning charge and received two years of probation, with credit for one day served. He completed probation in March and is now seeking to have his felony conviction dismissed.
