IMO there's no relation. I trust you to be truthful about box office if you liked it or not. There's a lot of noise around these DC movies in the way they're covered in the very top of the trades. I would be the first to admit they're performing if they actually were.
$44M budget will be considered VERY expensive even for The Conjuring universe. Those movies made upwards of 300m and 400m and more.

This is nonsense and you know it. You're falling for the PR umbrella they set around the DCU.
You just need to check WB's horror division history that was partly in the hands of Safran himself. How much money they put into marketing and what kind of return they expected.

Every DC movie is like that
If it bombs and they cut ties they reveal the real budget like with Supergirl/Black Adam/Flash
If it somehow crawls to "breakeven" they use the number they floated in the press to take a W
If Supergirl made 250 they would've said it was made for 100

After Gunn's egregious string of million-bleed flops, Gunn's DC has entered the same doom-mode Hamada's DC was in after Shazam.
Spend less to lose less.
They know what they have to do, they have to get past their damn egos and Bring Back Zack Snyder to finish his Superman/Justice League Saga

So stupid and so obvious.
Why not make an original horror & put it on your slate as WB if you're not aiming to capitalize on the DC brand.
Making Clayface is taking a potential release spot from other DC titles so it has to OVERPEFORM like low budget Deadpool/Joker. Simple

It's all so out there in the open for all to see lol
Hollywood is truly the place of networking. If you make "friends" (I wonder how) they'll turn the world upside down to make you look good

Careers were ruined because The Amazing Spider-Man 2 “only” made $750m. The Hollywood press wanted Sony burned to the ground (largely because they were doing Disney’s bidding). Now Gunn shits the bed financially twice in the span of 3 months and his career is unaffected.

HBO Max to the rescue! $200M in self-licensing deal. Take THAT
Here is Grace Randolph back is 2019 saying about another Peter Safran production that the idea behind a small budget DC movie is to make Deadpool money.
Not just aim to break even and cheapen the brand.

It's a coordinated campaign from the very top.
From "Superman only needs 500m" from WSJ to "Supergirl only needing 315m" from Deadline to this bullshit with Clayface.
Why would Gunn & Safran push for this public misinformation I can understand but why would publications help?

Why are you lying ? It made way less than Supergirl.

No it didn't. It made 132K dollars. It had 19K viewers. Half of Supergirl and 20% of Superman

Clayface has yet to open at number 1 in any market so far.
It debuted at 3rd in South Korea.
At 7th in Italy.
And outside the top 5 in France.
The DC brand is dead overseas
